RFU DC OUT means “RFU adaptor DC output.” On the Sony CCD-TRV model covered by Sony’s operating instructions, it is a special mini-jack rated at DC 5V that supplies power to a compatible RFU adaptor. The adaptor can route the camcorder’s audio and video to a television’s antenna input on certain older models. The jack is not a standard audio/video output.
What the RFU DC OUT jack is for
The connector provides DC power for an RFU adaptor, a legacy accessory used to connect some camcorders to a television through its antenna input. Sony’s CCD-FX420 manual, for example, says: “Use the supplied RFU adaptor to connect your camcorder to your TV.” That instruction describes the CCD-FX420 setup; it does not establish that the same adaptor works with every Sony camcorder.
On the CCD-TRV model documented in Sony’s operating instructions, the RFU DC OUT is specified as a special mini-jack at DC 5V. Treat that voltage and connector specification as model-specific, not as a universal specification for all Sony camcorders with a similar label.

Sony manuals identify RFU DC OUT separately from the camcorder’s VIDEO/AUDIO connectors and, on some models, its DV connector. The RFU jack powers the adaptor; the separate A/V or DV connection carries the video signal. Do not plug a generic power or A/V cable into RFU DC OUT just because it fits.

Choosing how to connect the camcorder
Choose based on the television’s inputs and what you want to do with the footage:
- TV with compatible A/V inputs: Use the camera’s separate VIDEO/AUDIO connections and a cable compatible with that exact model. Sony’s CCD-FX420 instructions describe an A/V cable connection for a TV with A/V inputs.
- TV with an antenna input only: The CCD-FX420 manual documents an RFU-adaptor setup for this case. Its diagram names the RFU-90UC; verify the camcorder’s exact model and regional suffix before sourcing an adaptor.
- Computer capture: Follow the exact camcorder manual’s A/V or DV output instructions, then use capture hardware compatible with that output. The RFU DC OUT jack is not a capture signal connection.
How the documented RFU-adaptor setup works
For the CCD-FX420 setup, Sony’s manual describes connecting the adaptor’s OUT to the TV’s antenna input. If desired, the TV antenna can be connected to the adaptor’s ANT jack. The manual also directs users to set the adaptor and TV to an unused VHF channel, 3 or 4. These directions apply to that documented camera and adaptor arrangement, not every Sony model or television.

Check compatibility before buying or connecting anything
- Find the complete camcorder model number, including its regional suffix, and consult its manual.
- Check whether your TV has compatible A/V inputs or only an antenna input.
- Confirm whether the goal is watching tapes on a TV or capturing them on a computer; the required connection path differs.
- Verify the accessory and connector compatibility for the exact camera. Sony’s CCD-FX420 manual identifies RFU-90UC for its setup, but the reviewed manuals do not establish universal compatibility or current availability.
