For container images, “software image stability” is a practical description—not a formal term in the cited standards—of how reliably you can identify and deploy the intended image while managing changes to images and builds. A digest identifies a specific image artifact; a tag is a human-readable label whose target may change, depending on registry policy. Pinning a digest can keep a deployment tied to one artifact, but it does not guarantee that rebuilding the same source will produce identical bytes.

What is a container image?

A container image is a software artifact containing an application and its dependencies. Kubernetes describes it as executable software that can run with assumptions about its runtime environment. An image can include a manifest, configuration object, filesystem layers, and, optionally, an image index. The manifest digest is the hash of the image index or manifest document, as Google Cloud explains in its container image digest documentation.

In this article, “image stability” refers specifically to controlling the identity and updates of container images. It is not a standardized definition for every kind of software image.

How do tags and digests affect image stability?

Tags are readable labels

A tag such as app:release is a convenient name for an image. Depending on the registry’s configuration, that label may later point to a different image digest. Kubernetes documents that tags can be moved; therefore, deploying by tag alone may not always retrieve the same artifact over time.

Digests identify image content

A digest is a content identifier associated with a particular artifact. The Open Container Initiative (OCI) Image Specification states: “The digest property of a Descriptor acts as a content identifier, enabling content addressability.” It also describes recalculating a digest to verify content. A reference pinned to a digest, such as app@sha256:…, identifies the specified artifact rather than relying on a tag that could move.

Digest pinning is useful when a deployment must consistently refer to a particular artifact. It identifies that artifact; it does not, by itself, explain who created it or how, and it does not promise that a future rebuild will be byte-for-byte identical.

Does a stable tag mean the image cannot change?

No. “Stable” can describe an update channel rather than an unchanging artifact. Microsoft’s image tag guidance explains that stable tags may be updated to receive servicing releases. The tag can therefore remain the familiar name while the image it identifies changes. Microsoft cautions against deploying with such tags when that behavior could create inconsistencies.

Tag behavior also depends on registry policy. Google Cloud documents both mutable tags, which can be associated with a changed digest, and immutable tags, whose association with a digest is held by repository policy. See Google Cloud’s repository and image naming documentation. Do not assume that all registries use the same defaults or enforce immutability in the same way.

Which approach fits the image’s purpose?

Approach What it provides What to account for
Deploy by tag A readable reference that may be convenient for following an update channel. The tag may point to a different digest later, depending on registry policy.
Deploy by digest A reference to a specific identified artifact. It does not make later builds reproducible or describe the artifact’s origin on its own.
Use an immutable-tag policy A registry-enforced association between a tag and its digest, where the repository supports and enables that policy. Confirm the actual repository policy; the behavior is not universal across registries.
Track a servicing tag A label intended to follow updated images, such as servicing releases within a release line. The image can change under the same tag; that may be unsuitable where deployments must remain on one artifact.

The right choice depends on whether the goal is to follow updates or to deploy a particular artifact. Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes those purposes rather than treating one tagging policy as best for every use.

What does a digest not tell you?

A digest helps answer, “Which image content does this reference identify?” It does not answer every supply-chain question. Provenance metadata can provide information about an image’s origin, authorship, and build process. Docker discusses this distinction in its image provenance guidance: artifact identity and build provenance are related but different kinds of information.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Likewise, using the same source code and a pinned base-image digest does not establish that repeated builds will produce byte-identical images. Digest identity applies to the identified artifact; reproducibility concerns whether separate build runs generate the same artifact. The cited specifications and guidance support the former distinction, not a blanket reproducible-build guarantee.

How to keep a deployment tied to the intended image

  1. Decide whether the deployment should follow updates. If it should track servicing releases, a moving tag may match that intent. If it must use one particular artifact, use a digest reference or an appropriate registry policy.
  2. Check the registry’s tag policy. Confirm whether the repository permits tags to move or enforces immutable tag associations. Do not infer policy from the tag’s name.
  3. Record and verify the digest. Use the digest associated with the image artifact, and verify content against that identifier where your workflow supports it. The OCI specification describes digest recalculation as a way to verify content.
  4. Inspect provenance when origin matters. A digest identifies content, while provenance metadata can help explain where and how the image was built.
