“No DP signal from your device” means your Dell monitor is not receiving a video signal through the DisplayPort input it is currently using. It is an input-status message, not proof on its own that the monitor is faulty. Start by waking the computer and monitor, then check that the monitor is set to the input connected to your computer.
What “DP signal” means
DP is short for DisplayPort, a video connection. Dell’s P2421 monitor manual documents the message “No DP signal from your device” when the display is not showing a signal from the selected DisplayPort input.
The message identifies the input with no displayed signal; it does not tell you which component, if any, has failed. The computer may be asleep, the monitor may be set to another input, or the connection may need checking.

Wake the computer and monitor
Press a key or move the mouse to wake the computer, and wake the monitor if needed. Dell’s P2421 manual advises checking the input source if the screen remains blank after waking.

Select the input that is actually connected
Use the monitor’s buttons or joystick to open its input-source controls and select DisplayPort if the computer is connected to that port. Dell’s monitor display troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking that the correct input source is selected. Button names and menu steps differ by model, so consult your monitor’s manual for the exact controls.

Check the cable at both ends
Make sure the video cable is firmly connected to the monitor and computer. If you can, try another compatible cable to check whether the existing one or its connection is the cause. Dell recommends checking the connection and swapping the cable where possible in its monitor troubleshooting guidance and no-video troubleshooting guidance. Match the replacement cable to the ports on your particular computer and monitor.

Test the monitor with another computer
If available, connect the monitor to a different computer. This helps narrow down whether the problem follows the original computer or remains with the monitor-and-cable setup. Dell recommends this cross-check as part of monitor troubleshooting.

If using USB-C, verify that the port supports video
A USB-C connector does not necessarily carry video: some USB-C ports support data or charging only. Check the port markings and the documentation for the exact computer and monitor models. Dell explains this distinction in its USB Type-C ports and cables guidance.

Use your model’s manual for advanced settings
Input options and controls vary among Dell monitors. The cited Dell guidance does not establish one DisplayPort-version setting or reset procedure that applies to every model. Check the manual for your monitor before changing advanced settings.
How to interpret the results
- If waking the computer or selecting the correct input restores the picture, the monitor was not showing a signal on the input it had selected.
- If another compatible cable works, the issue may be with the original cable or its connection.
- If the monitor works with another computer, investigate the original computer’s video output or connection. If the same monitor still has no picture with another computer and a cable you know works, follow Dell’s model-specific troubleshooting or contact Dell support rather than treating the message as a diagnosis of one failed part.
“No DP signal” versus “No DP Cable”
These messages are related but not identical. In the P2421 manual, “No DP Cable” appears when DisplayPort is selected but the corresponding cable is not connected; the manual says that display will enter standby after four minutes. “No DP signal from your device” reports that the selected DisplayPort input is not displaying a signal. The wording and behavior may vary by model, so check your monitor’s manual for its specific notifications.
