A nit is a unit of screen luminance: one nit equals one candela per square metre (cd/m²). On a TV specification sheet, a nit rating usually describes how bright the screen can get under a particular measurement—not how bright every scene will look, or how accurate its color will be.
What a TV’s nit rating tells you
Nits quantify luminance, the light emitted by a display. The figure is most useful for understanding a TV’s ability to show bright highlights, especially in HDR. It is not a stand-alone picture-quality score: it says nothing by itself about black level, contrast, shadow detail, color accuracy, or the brightness of an entire scene.
Always read a brightness claim with its measurement conditions. A peak figure may refer to a small part of the screen, a particular picture mode, or a brief measurement rather than sustained output across the whole panel.

Peak brightness describes a maximum under specified test conditions. It should not be treated as a promise that the TV can display that luminance across the full screen or maintain it over time.

ITU-R Report BT.2408-5 (2022) describes adjusting nominal peak luminance with a photometer and an HDR reference-white window patch typically covering 1% of the screen. A small window test helps evaluate highlight capability; it does not show how bright a mostly white scene or the whole screen will be.
When comparing measurements, check the window size, picture mode, and measurement duration. Results taken under different conditions are not directly comparable.
HDR mastering does not equal the TV’s brightness
HDR content can be mastered for luminance levels beyond a particular television’s capabilities. The TV uses tone mapping to adapt that content to what its panel can display. Support for an HDR format therefore does not mean the screen reproduces the content’s mastering peak exactly.

HDR10+ explains that the brightness viewers experience depends on the display’s capability, and that dynamic metadata can guide tone mapping from scene to scene. A useful comparison looks at both the panel’s measured performance and how the TV handles HDR content, not just the format logos or a peak-nit number.
Why more nits do not guarantee better color
Color gamut describes the range of colors a display can reproduce. Color volume adds how well it can reproduce those colors across different brightness levels. A wider gamut claim alone does not establish color accuracy or show how well colors hold up in bright highlights.
Black level and contrast matter too. High peak brightness cannot by itself keep dark areas deep or preserve shadow detail. Bright highlights, dark scenes, and saturated colors are parts of a system; judging one specification in isolation can conceal trade-offs.

How the room changes what brightness feels like
Ambient light, reflections, and visual adaptation affect the perceived image. A TV watched in a bright room may need to contend with reflections and room light, while a dark room makes black level and shadow detail especially noticeable.

| What to compare | What it helps you assess | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Peak and sustained luminance | Highlight capability and brightness across larger screen areas or longer periods | Check window size, picture mode, and duration; a peak claim is not a full-screen guarantee. |
| Black level and contrast | Whether dark regions look deep and shadow detail remains visible | High peak brightness alone cannot prevent washed-out blacks. |
| Color gamut and color volume | Color range and how colors hold up at different luminance levels | A wider gamut claim does not establish accuracy or color volume. |
| Tone mapping and HDR handling | How the TV renders content mastered beyond its panel’s capability | HDR format support does not mean the panel reaches the content’s mastering peak. |
| Viewing conditions | How room light, reflections, and visual adaptation affect the image | Consider the room where you will watch; one brightness threshold does not fit every environment. |
Technical HLG reference values are not buying targets
ITU-R Recommendation BT.2163-0 (2023) gives HLG reference-white luminance values at a 75% signal level for particular nominal display peaks:
- At a 500 cd/m² nominal peak: 120 cd/m² reference white.
- At a 1,000 cd/m² nominal peak: 203 cd/m² reference white.
- At a 2,000 cd/m² nominal peak: 344 cd/m² reference white.
- At a 4,000 cd/m² nominal peak: 581 cd/m² reference white.
These are workflow values for HLG, not general recommendations for what a consumer TV should reach. They should not be used as a universal minimum for a room, program, or viewer.
