“Head of a pin” appears in the expression “How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?” The phrase is used to criticize debate over details considered trivial or irrelevant to practical concerns. A common variant asks how many angels can stand on the point of a pin.
What does “head of a pin” mean?
On its own, “head of a pin” means the small, rounded end of a pin. In the familiar rhetorical question about angels dancing there, however, the phrase points to an imagined tiny space and serves as shorthand for arguments about fine points that seem to have little practical importance.
The expression is usually used critically: a speaker suggests that people are spending time on an abstract or minor question instead of something consequential. It does not necessarily mean the question is difficult; the emphasis is on its perceived lack of practical value.

The familiar story is often attributed to medieval scholastics, but the sources cited here do not establish that they debated the question in its familiar form. James Franklin’s 1993 article “Heads of Pins” reports that the earliest reference he knows is in William Chillingworth’s 1638 book Religion of Protestants a Safe Way to Salvation. Chillingworth accused unnamed scholastics of debating whether “a Million of Angels may not fit upon a needles point?” That is an early modern accusation, not proof that the alleged debate occurred.

A historical overview reports a related passage in William Sclater’s 1619 commentary: “did occupy a place; and so, whether many might be in one place at one time; and how many might sit on a Needles point; and six hundred such like needlesse points.” The overview also relays historian Peter Harrison’s suggestion that “Needles point” and “needlesse points” function as a pun in a criticism of scholastic argument. This is a related needle-point formulation, not the familiar question about angels dancing on a pin, and it should not be treated as a settled origin.
Franklin also relays a comment by historian Helen S. Lang: “The question of how many angels can dance on the point of a needle, or the head of a pin, is often attributed to ‘late medieval writers’ … In point of fact, the question has never been found in this form”. The distinction matters: medieval theologians did consider questions about angels and place, but that broader subject does not verify the pin anecdote.

How Aquinas fits into the story
Thomas Aquinas asked whether several angels could be in the same place. That related theological issue is not evidence that he debated how many angels could fit on a pin, nor that he originated the familiar expression.
How to use the expression
Use “angels dancing on the head of a pin” when criticizing a discussion you consider overly focused on fine distinctions with little practical consequence. Because it can sound dismissive, it may imply that the other person’s concern is trivial even when they consider it important.

What the historical dates do—and do not—show
- 1619: A historical overview reports Sclater’s related needle-point passage.
- 1638: Franklin reports Chillingworth’s accusation about a million angels on a needle’s point, which is the earliest reference he knows.
- 1993: Franklin published “Heads of Pins,” discussing the phrase’s history and attribution.
These dates identify reported textual references, not a proven first use. The wording and context differ, and the available accounts do not establish a definitive origin for the familiar idiom.
