In the U.S., crypto tax compliance means identifying taxable income and digital-asset dispositions, calculating and reporting the resulting income, gain, or loss under federal tax rules, answering the tax return’s digital-asset question accurately, and keeping records that support your return. A missing tax form does not erase a reporting obligation.

What counts as a digital asset for federal taxes?

The IRS defines a digital asset as a digital representation of value recorded on a cryptographically secured distributed ledger or similar technology, subject to its stated exclusion for cash. The category includes cryptocurrency, stablecoins, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs); it is broader than Bitcoin or activity on a single exchange. The IRS treats digital assets as property for federal income tax purposes, so general property tax principles apply.

What does compliance involve?

Identify taxable income and dispositions

Review activity to determine whether it produced income or involved a sale, exchange, or other disposition. The tax treatment depends on what happened and your circumstances. Moving an asset between wallets, by itself, should not automatically be described as a taxable sale.

Calculate and report the result

Use transaction records to work out the relevant amounts and report taxable income, gain, or loss for the tax year in which the transaction occurred. For individual capital transactions, the IRS FAQ points to Form 8949 and Schedule D, subject to the broker-reporting circumstances it describes. For non-business ordinary income, it points to Form 1040 and applicable related forms or schedules. Follow the instructions for the return and filing year that apply to your situation. IRS FAQ Q108 says taxable digital-asset income, gain, or loss must be reported regardless of the amount or whether you receive a W-2, Form 1099, or similar information return.

Answer the return question accurately

The federal digital-asset question is separate from calculating tax due. It asks whether, during the tax year, you received a digital asset as a reward, award, or payment for property or services, or sold, exchanged, or otherwise disposed of a digital asset or a financial interest in one. It appears on several federal returns, including Form 1040. Read the wording on the specific return you file and answer based on your activity.

Keep supporting records

Keep records that substantiate the positions you take on your return. IRS guidance identifies receipts, sales, exchanges, dispositions or transfers, and fair market value as relevant information. See IRS FAQ Q95. When transactions span multiple exchanges, wallets, or accounts, assemble the records so the activity and relevant basis can be reconciled.

What Form 1099-DA changes—and what it does not

Broker reporting on Form 1099-DA begins for covered reportable transactions on or after January 1, 2025. The form reports proceeds from broker transactions; it does not by itself determine your complete tax result. The IRS broker-reporting FAQ and About Form 1099-DA explain the reporting framework.

For 2025 activity, brokers must report gross proceeds but are not required to report basis. The IRS says most statements for 2025 will not include basis, so taxpayers may need to calculate it themselves. This is a transition detail for the 2025 tax year; check the instructions for the filing year concerned because reporting rules can change. IRS Publication 544 (2025) and its January 28, 2026 filing-season reminder also say income, gains, and losses remain reportable whether or not a Form 1099-DA arrives.

For preparation, the IRS advises reconciling activity across exchanges, wallets, and accounts, using appropriate basis methods, and categorizing income events accurately. These are practical record-organizing steps, not a substitute for applying the rules to your facts. IRS FS-2025-06, issued September 25, 2025, discusses this approach.
