For the 2026 release, “returning to a premium model” means buying the new Call of Duty separately at launch. Xbox lists Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 as a paid purchase rather than a Game Pass launch title. The game is scheduled for October 23, 2026, with campaign early access for eligible preorders beginning October 16.
That changes the decision from “Which Game Pass tier includes it?” to “Do I buy it now, wait roughly a year for the reported subscription addition, or skip this release?” The game purchase and online multiplayer access are also separate decisions.
What “premium model” means for the 2026 game
In this context, “premium” does not mean that every player must buy the most expensive edition. It means the new release is sold as a standalone game at launch instead of being included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass on day one.

Xbox identifies Modern Warfare 4 as the 2026 Call of Duty title. Its current US-facing listing gives October 23, 2026 as the release date for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. Players who preorder an eligible edition can begin the campaign on October 16, one week before the general release date.

Xbox’s listing explicitly says the game is not eligible for Xbox Game Pass and directs customers to purchase an edition. In practical terms, a player who wants to play at launch needs a license for the game, even if that player already pays for a Game Pass plan.
Launch editions and what each price covers
Xbox lists two editions and a separate upgrade option in the United States. The prices below are the listing figures accessed October 13, 2026; taxes, regional pricing, discounts and later promotions can change the amount shown at checkout.

The arithmetic is straightforward: the listed Standard price plus the listed upgrade price equals the listed Vault price before tax or promotions. That does not by itself establish that the Vault package is worthwhile. Compare the actual bonuses displayed for your platform with how often you will use them, rather than treating “premium” as an instruction to buy the expensive edition.

Windows Central reported on April 21, 2026 that Microsoft said future Call of Duty titles would not join Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch. The quoted plan is to add new releases during the following holiday season, “about a year later.” That is a policy timing statement, not a promised day on which Modern Warfare 4 will appear. Microsoft has not supplied an exact addition date in the information available here.
The same report quoted a Microsoft spokesperson saying that players have different preferences and that the change responds to feedback, while Microsoft will continue to listen and learn. That is the company’s stated rationale for the policy; it should not be treated as proof of a particular sales, subscription or revenue effect.

The game purchase and online multiplayer are separate costs
Buying an edition gives you the game license. It does not automatically provide every Game Pass benefit. Xbox’s listing says online multiplayer requires a separately sold Game Pass Essential subscription.
This creates a two-part console budget:
- Game license: Standard, Vault or the applicable upgrade, purchased separately.
- Online access: Game Pass Essential, purchased separately when you want the listed online multiplayer capability.
Xbox also says cloud play is available with Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, but the game must still be purchased. In other words, a higher subscription tier does not turn this launch title into a subscription-only entitlement. Cloud streaming and multiplayer are different benefits, and the store’s platform-specific conditions control which one applies to your setup.
No current subscription price for Game Pass Essential is provided, so do not calculate a universal “cheapest” route from the game price alone. Your total depends on the subscription tier, how long you keep it and whether you already pay for it for other games.

Which access route fits your situation?
You want the campaign on release week
Purchase an edition before launch. If early campaign access matters, confirm that the preorder and edition you select is eligible for the October 16 start date. You will not be able to substitute an existing Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscription for the launch purchase.

Plan for both the game license and Game Pass Essential. Buying the game without the required online subscription can leave the multiplayer component unavailable even though the campaign and other purchased content are installed.
You already subscribe to Game Pass
Keep the subscription if it serves your other games, but do not assume it covers Modern Warfare 4 at launch. Decide separately whether immediate access justifies buying Standard or Vault. The reported policy suggests a later Game Pass addition, not launch inclusion.
You are willing to wait
Waiting is the cost-saving option only if you can accept an uncertain date and the possibility that your preferred launch period has passed. Microsoft’s reported wording points to the following holiday season, approximately one year later, but it does not give a specific month or day. Recheck the live Game Pass catalog before cancelling a planned purchase.
You are deciding between Standard and Vault
Start with Standard unless the Vault benefits shown in the current store are valuable to you. The existence of a $30 upgrade means a Standard buyer can defer that choice, provided the upgrade remains offered for the same platform and edition. Buying Vault immediately is simpler for someone who already knows the extra contents justify the difference.

A practical purchase checklist
- Confirm the platform. Check that you are buying the Xbox Series X|S or Xbox-on-PC version intended for your hardware. Do not assume an edition or entitlement transfers across every platform.
- Check the release and early-access dates. The listed general release is October 23, 2026; the campaign early-access date is October 16 for eligible preorders.
- Read the live edition descriptions. Verify the Standard and Vault contents, preorder eligibility and any restrictions before paying.
- Choose the least commitment that meets your goal. Standard is the base purchase; Vault is the higher-priced package; the upgrade is for an existing Standard owner.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming “Game Pass” means day-one access
The 2026 listing says the game is not eligible for Game Pass. Confirm the specific title in the current catalog instead of relying on the way earlier Call of Duty releases were handled.
Confusing a subscription with ownership
A subscription can provide access to a catalog or online features, while the listed launch purchase provides the game license. The cloud-play condition makes this distinction explicit: streaming still requires that you own the game.
Buying Vault without checking its contents
The $30 difference between Standard and Vault is not a universal measure of value. Read the itemized benefits for your region and platform, and remember that the upgrade is a separate product intended for Standard owners.
Forgetting the multiplayer requirement
A completed purchase does not remove the separately sold Game Pass Essential requirement for online multiplayer. Check this before buying for a group whose main reason for playing is online matches.

The reported policy names the following holiday season, not an exact anniversary or release-day guarantee. Keep the purchase decision independent of an assumed Game Pass date.

Relying on stale promotion terms
Promotional eligibility and redemption windows are time-sensitive. Verify the current Activision Support instructions and store terms before counting a bonus toward the value of an edition.
What the policy does—and does not—tell us about future Call of Duty games
The reported Microsoft statement applies to future Call of Duty titles: no launch inclusion in Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, followed by planned addition during the next holiday season. It does not establish a release date, price, edition lineup or exact subscription-arrival date for every future game.
It also does not say that every player should buy at launch. The policy creates a deliberate choice between paying for immediate access and waiting for a later catalog addition. Players who already own older Call of Duty games in the Game Pass library are not told to remove them; the report says those existing titles remain available.
