A “cable TV killer” is an informal label for a service, platform, or device seen as able to replace or disrupt a traditional cable TV subscription. It is a metaphor, not a formal technology category or the name of one specific product. What it replaces depends on what a viewer watches.
What can the phrase refer to?
The label has been used for several different kinds of alternatives, which are not interchangeable:
- On-demand streaming services let viewers choose from a catalog of shows and films. They do not necessarily provide cable-style live channels.
- Live TV streaming services offer channel-based programming over the internet. Their channel lineups may differ from a cable provider’s.
- Broad video platforms host a wide range of online video, but should not automatically be treated as a replacement for a paid channel package.
- Streaming media players connect a television to internet video. A device helps people access services; it does not itself guarantee access to a particular channel lineup.
The distinction appears in a 2026 usage example: a B.C. Catholic column called YouTube a “cable TV killer” while distinguishing the general video platform from YouTube TV, which it described as a channel-based subscription service (B.C. Catholic, March 26, 2026).

The phrase suggests that an alternative could take viewers away from conventional cable, or significantly disrupt the cable-TV business. It is rhetorical rather than literal: it does not mean cable has disappeared, nor does it identify a technology that must replace every cable channel.

Its use goes back at least to the late 2000s, though the exact first coinage is not established. In a November 16, 2009 article titled “Is Sezmi a Cable TV Killer?”, Harry McCracken described Sezmi as combining broadcast stations, cable channels, internet content, and a set-top box. The article also mentioned Roku devices for accessing internet video, while noting that these offerings did not provide identical channels (Fast Company). That example shows how broadly the metaphor can be applied; it is not a current product recommendation.
Does streaming actually replace cable?
For some households, streaming may serve as their television option without a cable or satellite subscription. For others, streaming and cable coexist. Pew Research Center’s survey of 9,397 U.S. adults, conducted April 14–20, 2025 through its American Trends Panel, illustrates both patterns:

These are self-reported findings from Pew’s U.S. survey, published July 1, 2025 (Pew Research Center). They show that streaming is widespread and that many people use it alongside cable or satellite. They do not establish that streaming caused cable’s decline, that any one service fully replaces cable, or that every respondent relies on streaming as a primary TV source.

The label alone tells you little about whether an alternative will meet your needs. Compare what you actually watch and how you watch it:

- Total recurring cost: Account for broadband and any subscriptions you would need together, rather than considering one service in isolation.
- Location and devices: Confirm that the service works where you live and on the television or other devices you use.
- Channel lineup: Compare the specific channels you watch; the phrase “cable TV killer” does not promise an equivalent lineup.
A streaming media player is relevant if you need a way to watch internet video on a television, but it is only the access device—not proof that a particular service or channel is included.
