An “AI actress” is usually a computer-generated character presented as a performer, not a human actor working under a pseudonym. Tilly Norwood is such a character, created by Xicoia and promoted by producer Eline Van der Velden. Calling her an actress is a contested label: SAG-AFTRA says Norwood is a character, not an actor. Her significance lies less in proving that AI will replace performers than in exposing unresolved questions about consent, pay, creative credit, labor rules, and audience trust.
Who is Tilly Norwood, and is she a real actress?
The Associated Press identifies Tilly Norwood as an AI-made character produced by Xicoia and promoted by Eline Van der Velden. In plain terms, Norwood is a synthetic character: a digital creation presented as a performer, rather than a human actor. The term “AI actress” reflects how the project has been framed, but it can blur that important distinction. The Associated Press’s September 30, 2025 report covers the project and the reaction it drew.
SAG-AFTRA made the distinction explicit in a statement that day: “To be clear, ‘Tilly Norwood’ is not an actor, it’s a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers — without permission or compensation.” That statement documents the union’s position, including its allegation about training material; the available reporting does not independently establish what material was used or whether it was used with permission. Why has Tilly Norwood become a labor issue?
A synthetic character can be used in place of a human performer, but that possibility raises questions beyond whether a digital image looks convincing. Who supplied the creative work used to make a character? Did those people agree to that use, and are they compensated? Who is responsible for performance choices, and who receives credit? For performers and their representatives, these questions concern both individual livelihoods and the terms on which human work can be used to create or replace performances.

SAG-AFTRA opposes replacing human performers with synthetic ones and has raised concerns about unpermitted training use, compensation, jobs, livelihoods, and the value of human artistry. These concerns are central to understanding the dispute, but they should be read as the union’s stated position—not as proof that a particular dataset was used, that jobs have already been displaced by Norwood, or that viewers will reject synthetic characters.
What is the difference between a synthetic performer and a digital replica?
In its TV/Theatrical contract guidance, SAG-AFTRA distinguishes a wholly synthetic performer from a digital replica resembling an identifiable performer. Its guidance says: “Under the definition of a ‘synthetic performer,’ it must be wholly synthetic and not based on an actual performer.” A replica, by contrast, is connected to a specific person’s likeness. The distinction matters because protections for creating or using a wholly synthetic character are not identical to those for replicating a performer.

These are categories and obligations under SAG-AFTRA’s agreement guidance, not universal rules for all productions. The applicable terms depend on the agreement and the work. SAG-AFTRA’s AI contract guidance explains the distinction. Its 2026 TV/Theatrical Contracts page describes a successor agreement with updated protections concerning replicas and synthetic performers. For a specific production, the controlling agreement and its applicability matter; a union contract should not be mistaken for a law that applies everywhere.

How could AI-generated performers affect film and television?
Casting and employment
If productions use synthetic characters for roles otherwise played by people, the change could affect casting opportunities and the number or kind of performer jobs available. It could also create or shift work in areas such as character design and digital production. Neither outcome is guaranteed: the evidence here does not establish the scale of adoption or whether synthetic characters will replace, supplement, or simply coexist with human performers. A claim that AI will inevitably eliminate acting jobs—or that it will necessarily create more jobs—goes beyond what is known.

Consent, compensation, and credit
The synthetic-versus-replica distinction highlights two separate questions. A character may be wholly synthetic, while a replica is tied to an identifiable person whose likeness is involved. In either case, viewers and workers may want clarity about what material or likeness was used, what permissions were obtained, how compensation is handled, and who is credited for the creative work. Contract terms can address some obligations on covered productions; the available evidence does not establish a single industry-wide approach to every question.
Production choices and authorship
A synthetic performer could give a production more control over a character’s digital appearance or make certain kinds of scenes possible without a conventional on-camera performance. But a generated character does not make creative responsibility disappear. People still make decisions about the character, the story, and how the final work is presented. Productions may therefore face questions about how to recognize human contributions and explain the role of generated material. The extent to which these workflows will change film and television remains uncertain.

Audience trust and transparency
Some viewers may welcome new forms of screen performance; others may care whether a character represents a human performer or how its underlying material was obtained. There is no representative audience survey in the cited sources establishing whether viewers accept or reject Tilly Norwood or AI-generated performers generally. Online reaction and a union’s assessment cannot substitute for measured audience research. Clear disclosure could help viewers understand what they are watching, but the available sources do not establish a common disclosure standard.

In 2026, CBS News reported that Van der Velden said Norwood was poised for a feature-film debut in Misaligned, a Particle6 production. That is a reported plan, not evidence in itself that the film has been released or distributed. CBS News’s report describes the creator’s account and the project. Without confirmed release details, it is more accurate to describe Misaligned as a reported feature project than to say Norwood has made a screen debut.
