“Above the line” has different meanings depending on the subject. In marketing, it usually means advertising through broad-reach media. In accounting, it describes items placed above a specified line in a financial statement, and in US tax usage it can refer to certain costs deducted before tax is calculated. The surrounding context determines which meaning applies.
What does “above the line” mean in marketing?
In advertising, “above the line” (ATL) traditionally describes broad-reach media campaigns intended to communicate with large audiences. Common examples include television, newspapers and other press, radio, cinema, and posters. Contemporary definitions may also include internet advertising, so the traditional list is not exhaustive. Cambridge Dictionary and Monash Business School reflect these different scopes.
The term is often contrasted with “below the line” (BTL), which generally refers to more direct or targeted promotional activity, such as direct mail or trade shows. The distinction is a useful traditional framework, not a fixed rule for classifying every modern channel: advertising and other marketing activity increasingly overlap. The Interactive Advertising Bureau discusses this blurring and ATL’s traditional role in building awareness and consideration.

In accounting, the phrase is relative: it identifies items shown above a particular line in a financial statement. The line’s meaning depends on the statement and the accounting convention being used, so “above the line” does not have one universal accounting definition.

For example, one usage describes income and expenses that show how profit or loss was made, distinguishing them from entries about how profit is distributed. Other explanations use a different income-statement boundary, such as gross margin, with operating expenses, interest, and taxes below it. TERMIUM Plus, Collins Dictionary, and AccountingTools describe these related but non-identical usages. When reading a report, identify which statement and line the author means rather than assuming a standard boundary.
What does “above the line” mean for US taxes?
In US tax terminology, the phrase can refer generally to costs deducted from total income before tax is calculated. That dictionary-level meaning does not determine whether a particular expense is deductible: eligibility depends on the applicable tax rules and year. Cambridge Dictionary records this US usage; consult current tax guidance for a specific deduction.

How can you tell which meaning applies?
- Advertising or media discussion: it most likely means broad-reach advertising, often contrasted with more direct or targeted promotion.
- Financial statement or profit discussion: check which statement and reporting line is being used; accounting conventions vary.
- US tax discussion: it may refer to a deduction made before calculating tax, but the phrase alone does not establish eligibility.
The phrase’s origin is not definitively established. The Interactive Advertising Bureau discusses a possible connection to historical accounting practices but treats that explanation as uncertain; no specific origin should be presented as settled.
