Your phone reads the QR pattern and shows what it contains—often a link, but sometimes text or an app action. In the usual camera flow, the scan and the action are separate: you review the result, then tap it to continue. Scanning does not verify that the destination is trustworthy.
What happens when your phone scans a QR code?
- The camera detects the pattern. Point your phone at a printed or displayed code. On a supported device, the camera or a scanner feature can recognize it without you taking a photo.
- The phone decodes the data. Camera software turns the pattern into information the phone can present, such as a web address or text. Apple and Google explain the user-facing scan steps, but do not establish one universal decoding method or say that every phone processes scans entirely on-device or sends every image to a server.
- You get a result to review. A banner, bubble, or link may appear. Apple’s iPhone instructions say to tap the displayed link; Google’s camera instructions similarly tell users to click the banner to open the result.
- The selected destination or feature takes over. A link may open in a browser, while other data may display as text or open an app. Any further prompts depend on the website, app, or specific feature.
A QR code is a way to carry data, not a certificate that the data or destination is safe.
What might the code contain?
The result depends on what was encoded and what your phone supports. Google documents camera results that can open a browser, show text, or launch an app such as a payment app. QR codes can also be used for purpose-specific features: Google’s account sign-in guidance describes a QR-based sign-in flow with on-screen verification, while its Quick Share guidance describes a file-sharing flow that may use a secure link and internet access in some cross-platform cases. These are different uses of QR codes, not one standard action that every scan performs.

Labels and controls can differ across phone models, software versions, and settings. In the documented camera flows, recognition presents a result for you to tap rather than automatically completing the linked action.

Is it safe to scan a QR code?
Scanning is not, by itself, proof that your phone has been hacked. The practical risk is what you do next: a deceptive destination can ask for passwords or payment details, encourage a malicious download, or prompt you to authorize access. The FTC warns about fake sites reached through QR codes, including codes pasted over legitimate parking-meter codes and codes sent in unexpected messages. FBI guidance also describes unsolicited packages with codes meant to prompt disclosure of personal or financial information or a malicious download. Those advisories describe tactics, not how likely any individual scan is to be a scam.
Check the source and preview
- Before opening a result, inspect the preview URL. Be alert to misspellings or lookalike domains.
- Be wary of codes in unexpected texts, emails, or packages, especially if the message creates urgency or asks you to log in, pay, or download something. Verify the request using a website or phone number you already trust.
- For a code in a public place, check whether a sticker seems to have been placed over another code. If a payment code looks altered, use the service’s official payment channel instead.
Make a separate decision about sensitive prompts
A page that appears after a scan can still be fraudulent. Do not enter credentials or financial details, download a file, or grant permissions just because the prompt followed a QR scan. Keep your operating system and apps updated. If you entered a password on a site you now suspect was fake, the FTC advises changing that password; also review relevant account and payment activity.

Why won’t my phone scan the code?
Failure to recognize a code often has a physical cause. Google lists smudges, poor lighting, tilt, distance, blur, glare, and framing as factors that can interfere with scanning.
- Wipe the camera lens gently with a soft, clean cloth.
- Improve the lighting and reduce glare from the code’s surface.
- Hold the phone steady, aim it squarely at the code, and adjust the distance until the full pattern is in frame and clear.
- If the camera still shows no result, try the phone’s available scanner control or check whether QR scanning is supported and enabled on that device.
