A crypto coin balance is the amount a wallet, blockchain address, account, or exchange displays as associated with it. It is a view of network or provider records—not a number physically stored inside the wallet app. The amount shown may include funds that are pending or otherwise unavailable, so a displayed total is not necessarily the amount you can spend right now.

Where a crypto balance comes from

Wallet software reads or calculates information from a blockchain, then presents it in a user interface. The underlying record depends on the network: Bitcoin-style systems track unspent transaction outputs, while account-based systems maintain account state. The balance on an exchange may instead be a figure recorded by that service, so the label and scope matter.

UTXO networks such as Bitcoin

In a UTXO system, a transaction consumes earlier outputs and creates new ones. A wallet totals the unspent outputs associated with the keys it manages. When you pay someone, the transaction may also create a change output that returns the remainder to an address controlled by your wallet. As a result, one receive address may not show all funds the wallet groups together.

Account-based networks and tokens

In an account-based system, the network maintains a balance as part of account state. Token balances are also associated with the relevant blockchain’s state. The Federal Reserve’s explanation of tokens and accounts distinguishes these network records from objects held inside wallet software.

What common balance labels mean

Labels are not standardized across every wallet or service. Read them as that provider defines them rather than assuming one universal meaning.

Label Typical meaning What to check
Confirmed An amount recognized in the chain’s confirmed state. Exodus documentation says most supported chains treat one confirmation as confirmed, while some require more. The chain’s confirmation threshold and the wallet’s definition. Exodus documentation
Unconfirmed An amount associated with pending transactions. A wallet may include a pending incoming amount in a total but exclude it from spendable funds. Whether pending receipts are included in the total and when the wallet considers them usable. Exodus documentation
Available or spendable The amount the wallet currently considers movable in a transaction. Confirmation requirements and wallet settings that affect spendability. Bitcoin Core reference
Locked or reserved Funds withheld for wallet operations or other restrictions. Some systems distinguish reserved amounts from frozen amounts. The wallet’s reserve rules and whether a balance is locked or frozen. Exodus documentation; Ripple documentation

Why your available balance can be lower than your total

A total may combine amounts that are confirmed, pending, reserved, or locked. Available balance is a narrower calculation: it represents what the wallet currently permits or considers spendable. Confirmation requirements and spendability rules depend on the network and the wallet’s implementation, so the same transaction state can be presented differently by different interfaces.

How to investigate a balance mismatch

  1. Match the asset and network. Confirm that both screens refer to the same coin or token on the same blockchain, not a similarly named asset on another network.
  2. Match the account scope. Check whether you are comparing the same wallet account or address. On UTXO networks, the wallet can aggregate outputs associated with multiple addresses; a single receive address may show only part of that total.
  3. Compare like balance fields. Determine whether each figure is total, confirmed, available, or spendable. Do not compare a total on one screen with an available amount on another as if they were the same measure.
  4. Check pending transactions. See whether one interface includes unconfirmed receipts or treats pending outgoing transactions differently.
  5. Check confirmations and restrictions. Review the wallet’s definition of confirmed or spendable and look for reserved, locked, or frozen amounts.
  6. Verify the underlying records. If the difference remains, check the transaction and address information using the wallet’s documented tools or an appropriate blockchain explorer. The right check depends on the asset and provider.

A displayed mismatch alone does not establish that funds are lost or that an app is wrong. Its cause depends on the asset, network, account scope, pending activity, and the provider’s balance rules.

A practical way to read a balance

  • Use “total” to understand the overall amount the interface associates with the account, not automatically the amount ready to send.
  • Use “available” or “spendable” for the amount the wallet currently treats as movable, while checking its confirmation and wallet-option rules.
  • For a difference between two screens, compare the same asset, network, account scope, balance label, pending-transaction treatment, and confirmation or reserve rules.
