The letters A, B, X and Y are names printed on the four face buttons of many controllers. They tell you which physical button to press. They do not tell you what that button does. A game decides the action, so the same letter can jump in one title, confirm a menu choice in another, and brake in a third. To find the right button, read the prompt on screen and match it to the label on your controller.

What the letters actually identify

On a controller that carries A, B, X and Y markings, each letter names one physical button in the cluster on the right side of the pad. Nintendo’s official diagrams for the Joy-Con controller and the Switch Pro Controller both label the same four-button group this way. Microsoft’s input documentation treats A, B, X and Y as separate controls in its DirectInput and XUSB device mappings. The Xbox Wireless Controller, which Microsoft identifies in its console terminology as the controller bundled with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles, uses the same four letters.

Notice what those sources do not say. None of them assigns a gameplay function to a letter. The label is a name for a button, and the action belongs to the software.

Why the same letter can do different things

Game developers map their own actions to whatever buttons the player has. Apple’s archived Game Controller Programming Guide illustrates this with two example layouts. In a platform game, one example assigns jumping to A or B. In a driving game, another example assigns acceleration to A and braking to X or B. These are illustrations of how a developer might lay out controls, not rules that carry over to other titles.

Example from Apple’s archived guidance Button labels used Action assigned
Platform game A or B Jump
Driving game A Accelerate
Driving game X or B Brake

The practical consequence is simple. If you move from one game to another, the letter on the prompt is the reliable guide, not the habit you built in the last game. Apple’s documentation makes the same point from the developer side. In its words: “As you implement controller support in your game, make sure you describe those controls to the player.” The passage appears in the section “Identifying Controls Within Your Game” of the archived document Incorporating Controllers into Your Game, which is why well-designed games show you the label they expect you to press.

How the layouts differ across brands

The same letter does not always sit in the same place. Nintendo and Xbox arrange the four buttons differently, and PlayStation does not use letters at all.

Controller family Naming on the buttons Position of the buttons (right-side cluster)
Nintendo Switch (Joy-Con and Pro Controller) A, B, X, Y A on the right, B at the bottom, X at the top, Y on the left

PlayStation controllers Symbols rather than letters; PlayStation Support’s “Controllers Support” page describes the action buttons as a group Follow the symbol shown in the game’s prompt; the support page does not explain what each symbol means

Because A and B swap places between Nintendo and Xbox, pressing the button you remember as “A” on one controller can land on a different button on the other. Read the position from the controller in your hand, not from memory.

How to match a prompt to the button you need

  1. Read the prompt exactly. If the screen shows a letter, look for that letter. If it shows a symbol, look for the matching symbol on a PlayStation controller.
  2. Identify your controller model. Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PlayStation controllers each use a different layout. Use the official diagram for your model to find the position of the labeled button.
  3. Check the game’s controls or button settings menu. Many games let you view the full mapping, and some let you change it. The exact menu name varies by game.
  4. Test the action in a safe moment. Press the button in a menu or tutorial before relying on it during timed play.

When the letter and the result do not match

  • The prompt shows a letter but the controller has no matching label. Some third-party or older controllers use other markings or color coding. Use the game’s button settings or the device’s own diagram to confirm which physical button the game is reading.
  • A prompt shows a different button than the one you expect. The game is following its own layout. Trust the prompt and the in-game mapping over the general convention for the platform.
  • You switch between consoles. A letter on an Xbox prompt and the same letter on a Switch prompt can sit in different places. Check the position on the controller you are using.

What is not established

Official documentation for these controllers does not explain why the manufacturers chose these particular letters or symbols, and the sources cited above do not give a reliable origin for them. Any account of that history should be treated as unverified unless a manufacturer publishes one.
