The icons at the top of an iPhone screen are status icons: they show information such as network connection, battery state, privacy activity, and features currently in use. The exact icons you see depend on your iPhone model, iOS version, carrier, region, and what is active. On Face ID models, some additional status icons appear at the top of Control Center rather than in the status bar.
Connectivity and cellular icons
These symbols indicate how your iPhone is connected or what network service is available. Apple’s iPhone status-icon guide includes Wi-Fi, cellular signal, Airplane Mode, network labels such as 5G and LTE, SOS-only, satellite features, Wi-Fi Calling, Personal Hotspot, VPN, and network activity. Whether a particular network label or feature appears depends on your supported model, carrier, and country or region.
- Cellular bars: Show cellular signal strength. Fewer bars indicate a weaker signal.
- Two rows of cellular bars: On a Dual SIM iPhone, the upper row represents the line used for cellular data and the lower row represents the other line. Open Control Center to see the associated plan labels and carrier names.
- Wi-Fi, Airplane Mode, and network labels: Indicate the connection or service shown by the symbol. Labels such as 5G and LTE are not available in every location or on every carrier and plan.
- SOS-only, satellite, Wi-Fi Calling, Personal Hotspot, VPN, and network activity: Refer to those respective service or connection states; their availability and presentation vary.
Battery and charging icons
The battery icon shows the iPhone’s battery level. A yellow battery indicates Low Power Mode. A charging symbol means the battery is charging; a gray charging indicator means charging is paused. A battery symbol associated with Bluetooth can show the battery level of a paired Bluetooth device rather than the iPhone.

Privacy indicators show when an app or system feature is using a sensitive capability. A camera or microphone indicator means an app is using that sensor. A location arrow means Location Services is being used; it does not by itself tell you whether the app’s access is appropriate.

If you do not expect an app to use your location, review its permission at Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Apple explains that when Location Services is active for an app, a black or white arrow appears in the status bar or Control Center in its Location Services privacy guidance.
Icons for features and active sessions
Some status icons appear because a feature or session is currently active. Apple’s guide includes indicators for phone and FaceTime calls, screen recording, navigation, CarPlay, syncing, Do Not Disturb, portrait orientation lock, and alarms. A Focus icon appears in the status bar when a Focus is on. On iPhone models with Face ID, additional status icons may be visible at the top of Control Center.

Where to check an unfamiliar icon
- Open Control Center. On a Face ID iPhone, swipe down from the top-right corner. Check whether the icon appears there and, on Dual SIM models, look for the carrier and plan labels.
- Check what is active. Consider whether you are on a call, recording the screen, using navigation or CarPlay, syncing, or have a Focus, alarm, or orientation lock enabled.
- Review the relevant Settings section. For an unexpected location arrow, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and inspect app access.
- Compare it with Apple’s current status-icon guide. If the symbol is not in the general list, its meaning or placement may depend on your iOS version, model, carrier, or region.
