On Waze, colored traffic overlays show how traffic is moving: green means free flow, yellow light traffic, light red moderate traffic, red heavy traffic, and dark red traffic near a standstill. If the roads are colored even where no traffic overlay appears, you may be seeing the map’s road-type styling instead. Those are two different layers, and road-type colors do not have one universal meaning everywhere.

What Waze’s traffic colors mean

Waze’s traffic colors describe current traffic conditions, not a road’s permanent classification. Waze’s partner-facing Traffic View documentation says the color coding mirrors the app and defines the scale as follows:

Traffic color Meaning
Green Free flow; cars can move at the speed limit.
Yellow Light traffic; drivers can still travel at relative speeds.
Light red Moderate traffic, with congestion starting to build.
Red Heavy traffic; expect significant delays.
Dark red Bumper-to-bumper conditions, with traffic near a standstill.

These colors are an overlay on the map. A road without a traffic highlight should not be assigned a traffic level based on its underlying map color. Waze Partners Help: Traffic View

Why some roads have different base colors

Waze also has a Map Editor color scheme in which road colors indicate road types. Waze Community guidance from a Product Expert notes that the conventions can depend on the local community, so a color seen in one country or region is not a reliable universal legend. Waze Community discussion

Garmin Drive™ 53 GPS Navigator
  • Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
  • Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
  • View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones

  • Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks

In practical terms, a colored traffic stripe that changes with conditions is a traffic cue; a road’s base styling is part of how the map is drawn. Waze says its maps and navigation are powered by users, which helps explain why map conventions and editing practices may differ by community. About Waze

How to tell which color scheme you’re seeing

  • If the colored section follows a road and reflects current slowdowns, read it as the traffic overlay.
  • If roads across the map have distinct base colors regardless of congestion, the Map Editor scheme may be active.
  • Do not use the base color of an unhighlighted road to infer its traffic speed or congestion.

A Waze Community Product Expert described two daytime schemes: Default, where roads appear gray, and Map Editor, whose road colors match the online Waze Map Editor. The response gave this path for Waze version 4.92.0.0 and later: My Waze > Settings > Map display > Type. Treat those labels as version-sensitive; the same discussion noted that the help page in question was outdated. Waze Community discussion

How to hide traffic colors

A 2023 Waze Community Product Expert response described the control as Settings > Map Display > Show Traffic. If your app uses different labels, look in Map Display for a traffic-display control. This is community guidance rather than a current official help article, so the exact path may vary by app version. Waze Community discussion
