An IP rating tells you how an enclosure performed against specified dust and water tests; it does not make a phone universally waterproof. The code’s digits describe different kinds of protection, and the manufacturer’s test conditions determine what a particular device’s rating means in practice.
What an IP rating means
IP stands for Ingress Protection. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 60529, Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code), classifies how an enclosure protects against ingress. The IEC’s current consolidated catalog entry combines the 1989 standard with amendments from 1999 and 2013 and listed corrigenda through 2019. In a code such as IP68, the first characteristic digit concerns protection against dust, while the second concerns protection against water. They refer to different hazards, so an IP code should be read as a whole rather than reduced to its last digit.

The water digit identifies a category of protection tested under defined conditions. IEC’s categories cover different forms of exposure, from drops to immersion and high-pressure water jets. The number alone does not establish one universal immersion depth or duration for every device carrying that code. Consult the device maker’s stated test conditions and instructions. IEC’s overview describes the range of water-protection tests.

For example, a Samsung user guide describes an IP68 test in controlled conditions using freshwater at 1.5 metres for 30 minutes. That is the condition stated in that manufacturer’s guidance—not a definition of IP68 that can be applied to every phone or other product. Check the current manual for the exact model you own. Samsung’s water-resistance guidance also cautions that salt water, ionized water, and alcoholic beverages may enter more readily than freshwater.
Is an IP-rated phone waterproof?
No. An IP rating is evidence of performance under specified tests, not a guarantee that a phone can safely be used underwater or will resist every spill. Apple says supported iPhones were tested under controlled laboratory conditions and warns against swimming or intentionally submerging them. Its guidance also says to avoid bathing, pressurized or high-velocity water, sauna or steam-room use, impacts, and disassembly. Read the instructions for your own model rather than treating a rating as permission for water-based activities. Apple’s iPhone splash, water, and dust resistance guidance lists its advice and supported models.

Liquid and exposure conditions matter, too. A freshwater test does not prove the same protection in seawater, pool water, drinks, or forceful streams. Follow the exact product instructions for the liquid and situation involved; do not infer that a device rated for immersion is suitable for swimming or other intentional submersion.

Yes. A rating describes protection under test conditions; it does not establish that protection remains unchanged over the device’s life. Apple says resistance may decrease with normal wear. Google’s Pixel 9 family guide says its phones are designed to comply with IP68 when they leave the factory, but are not waterproof; wear, repair, disassembly, or damage may diminish or eliminate their resistance. After a drop, repair, or other damage, do not assume the original enclosure protection is intact. The same caution applies to devices that have been opened or disassembled: their current condition may differ from the one represented by the original rating.
How to compare two devices’ ratings
When evaluating phones or other electronics, compare the full code and the circumstances behind it, not just the water digit.

- Read both digits. The first is dust-related and the second is water-related.
- Find the maker’s actual test conditions. Look for depth, duration, liquid type, and any other stated conditions in the model’s official support page or manual.
- Account for the device’s condition. A new device, a worn device, and one that has been damaged or repaired may not have the same practical protection.
- Follow use and warranty guidance. A test classification is not an instruction to swim with a phone or expose it to liquids the manufacturer warns against.
For liquid damage, check the exact manufacturer warranty and the rules that apply in your region. Apple says liquid damage is not covered under its warranty, subject to possible consumer-law rights; Google says liquid damage voids the warranty for the Pixel 9 family described in its guide. Terms can differ by model and region, so consult the applicable official documentation. Apple’s support page and Google’s guide provide their respective details.
Extra protection near water
If you need to keep a phone near water, a waterproof phone pouch may provide an additional barrier. Treat it as another item with its own limits: check the pouch’s tested depth, duration, compatibility, and care instructions. Neither the pouch nor the phone’s IP rating is a guarantee against damage.
