A foldable phone case protects the surfaces its design physically covers: that might include parts of the frame and back, raised edges near a display, the camera area, or the hinge. A hinge cover adds material over the hinge, but it is not proof the phone will survive a drop or that the inner folding screen is protected from failure.
What parts of a foldable phone can a case cover?
Coverage depends on the specific case and exact phone model. Some designs cover the back and frame; others add raised edges around a display, a rim around the camera bar, or a cover over the hinge. These are descriptions of where case material sits, not guarantees that those parts will remain undamaged in an accident.
For example, Google’s Pixel Fold case listing describes raised edges and extra coverage around the hinge and camera bar, and says the case is made for use with the phone open or closed. That confirms the listed design features, not a measured drop-protection rating.

A hinge-covering case places a physical layer over an exposed exterior area. Spigen describes full hinge coverage on its Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim Armor Pro and Pixel Fold Thin Fit listings; ZAGG says its Bridgetown Pixel Fold case is designed to cover the hinge. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent tests demonstrating that a case prevents hinge failure or damage from a particular impact.

Hinge coverage also does not establish that a case seals the mechanism against dust, or that it will not interfere with the hinge. Check the specific design and manufacturer guidance rather than treating “hinge protection” as a guarantee.
Will a case protect the inner folding screen?
A case may cover the outside of the phone and provide raised edges where its design allows, but the product descriptions here do not show that a case prevents damage to the inner folding display. Nor do they establish that raised edges prevent screen breakage. Google’s explanation of how it designed the Pixel Fold hinge describes the phone’s mechanism, not a case’s ability to prevent screen damage.

Google says of the Pixel Fold hinge: “When it opens, the hinge is completely flat; it is moved entirely out of the way of the Pixel Fold’s display, which is what allows the phone to be so thin.” That is a statement about Google’s device design, not evidence of case protection.

Use the exact phone model and generation when comparing cases. A case listed for one foldable is not evidence of fit on another generation.

- Hinge coverage: Check whether the hinge is exposed or covered, and how the manufacturer describes the cover.
- Display-edge coverage: Look for raised edges and note which edges they cover when the phone is open and closed.
- Camera coverage: Check whether a rim or other feature extends around the camera bar or lenses.
- Open-and-closed use: Confirm that the listing says the case works in both configurations if that matters to you.
- Evidence: Separate design features from quantified, independent drop-test results. The cited listings do not provide a basis for ranking brands by protection performance.
For a targeted search, use a phrase such as Pixel Fold case with hinge coverage or check the manufacturer’s listing for the precise Galaxy Z Fold model. Confirm current compatibility before buying.

The cited materials do not provide independent comparative drop tests, a percentage of damage prevented, or evidence that a particular case prevents inner-screen damage. Samsung’s historical article covers the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3, introduced in 2021, and discusses device hinge and debris-management design—not what a case accomplishes or what newer models provide. Accordingly, treat claims such as raised edges, camera-bar coverage, and a hinge cover as descriptions of physical design. Without relevant test evidence, they do not tell you whether the phone will survive a particular drop or avoid a mechanical or display failure.
