To create a Wi-Fi 7 network, you need a Wi-Fi 7 router or access point. To use Wi-Fi 7 features on a particular device, that phone, laptop, tablet, or desktop also needs Wi-Fi 7 hardware, plus compatible software and drivers. Older devices can still connect to the new router, but they continue to use the Wi-Fi features they support.

Which devices need Wi-Fi 7 support?

Think of Wi-Fi as a connection between two ends: the router or access point and the device using the network. The router provides the network; the client device must also support Wi-Fi 7 to use its client-side features. Intel notes that this can require hardware, manufacturer (OEM) enablement, operating-system support, and a compatible router or access point (Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 overview for gaming).

  • Router or access point: It must support Wi-Fi 7 to broadcast a Wi-Fi 7 network.
  • Phone, laptop, or tablet: It needs Wi-Fi 7 client support to use Wi-Fi 7 capabilities. A device that supports an earlier Wi-Fi generation can still connect, but does not gain Wi-Fi 7 features.
  • Desktop PC: It may have Wi-Fi 7 built in or use a compatible add-in adapter. Before buying a card, check the exact PC or motherboard, interface, antennas, drivers, and manufacturer support. Intel’s BE201 specifications list supported bands, interface, operating systems, and other details; compatibility depends on the system.
  • TV, console, smart-home device, or older phone: It can usually remain in service if it supports a Wi-Fi generation accepted by the router. It will connect using its own supported capabilities, not as a Wi-Fi 7 client.

For example, the Wi-Fi Alliance’s record lists the TP-Link Archer BE800 as a Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 home/small-office router, certified December 25, 2023. Certification documents specified interoperability features; it is not a guarantee of performance or a statement about current price or availability (Wi-Fi Alliance product finder).

What Wi-Fi 7 benefits require a Wi-Fi 7 client?

Wi-Fi 7, also known as IEEE 802.11be, includes features such as 320 MHz channels, 4K QAM, and Multi-Link Operation (MLO). MLO lets supported devices use multiple bands or links, which can help throughput, latency, or connection reliability. To benefit from these features, the client and router must both support the relevant capability; a Wi-Fi 7 label on the router alone is not enough (Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 technology overview).

Support can vary even among Wi-Fi 7 devices. When comparing equipment, check that both ends support the specific feature you care about, that the client’s operating system and drivers enable it, and that the router supports it. A certification can help establish specified interoperability, but it does not promise a particular speed in your home.

Can older devices connect to a Wi-Fi 7 router?

Yes. Wi-Fi 7 is backward compatible with previous Wi-Fi generations. Older devices can connect to a Wi-Fi 7 router and use the features available to them; they do not become Wi-Fi 7 clients. You do not need to replace a working TV, console, smart-home device, or phone solely to use a Wi-Fi 7 router as your access point (Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 guidance).

Do you need 6 GHz for Wi-Fi 7?

No, but access to 6 GHz—and features that rely on it—depends on local regulations and device support. Where regulators do not permit unlicensed Wi-Fi operation in that spectrum, a device uses 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz instead. Band availability can vary by region, so check the local specifications for both router and client. Apple describes this regional limitation in its Wi-Fi 7 availability guidance.

Will a Wi-Fi 7 router make your internet faster?

Not automatically. Your connection is limited by the capabilities of both endpoints, your internet plan, the router’s wired connections, network congestion, distance, walls, and other interference. A device may also fail to use a feature if its operating system, driver, or manufacturer configuration does not enable it.

Published peak rates are not normal household speed guarantees. Intel gives a theoretical maximum of 5.76 Gbps for a 2×2 Wi-Fi 7 client supporting 320 MHz channels, 4096 QAM, and MLO under a draft-specification footnote; its separate over-the-air estimate uses an assumed efficiency. Intel lists a maximum speed of 5.8 Gbps for its BE201 adapter configuration and cautions that results can vary by system and use (BE201 specifications). These figures describe vendor-published capabilities, not the speed to expect from a particular home connection.

What to check before upgrading

  1. Identify the devices that matter. List the phones, computers, and other clients for which you want Wi-Fi 7 features; older devices can remain connected.
  2. Verify support at both ends. Confirm the router and each target client support Wi-Fi 7 and the particular features you want, such as MLO or 320 MHz channels.
  3. Check software and compatibility. Confirm operating-system, driver, and manufacturer support. For a desktop adapter, verify the card’s interface, antennas, and compatibility with the specific system.
  4. Check regional bands. Confirm which Wi-Fi bands are permitted and supported where you live; 6 GHz availability is not universal.
  5. Match the rest of the connection to your goal. Consider the router’s wired ports and your ISP plan, as well as the placement and obstructions that affect wireless performance.
