Using crutches after a knee injury means walking may need support or your injured leg may need protection. It does not, by itself, tell you whether you have a fracture, ligament tear, meniscus injury, or a severe injury. The diagnosis and your clinician’s weight-bearing instructions—not the crutches alone—determine what you should do next.
Does needing crutches mean your knee injury is serious?
Not necessarily. Crutches can help you move while reducing or controlling the load through an injured leg. A clinician may recommend them because of your symptoms, walking ability, injury, or an individualized plan to protect the knee. Their use alone does not establish the injury’s diagnosis or severity.
Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust notes that knee injuries can involve bone, ligaments, cartilage (including the meniscus), tendons, or muscles. Because crutches can be used across this range of injuries, they do not identify which structure is affected.

Can crutches tell you whether you tore a ligament or meniscus?
No. Crutch use is not proof of a fracture, ligament or meniscus tear, or any particular severity grade. Nor is it a reliable way to compare two people’s injuries: their clinicians may recommend crutches for different reasons and prescribe different levels of support.

Why might a clinician give you crutches?
Crutches can support walking while limiting or controlling weight through the injured leg. The exact reason and technique depend on the assessment and the plan for your injury.
University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust distinguishes between non-weight-bearing and partial-weight-bearing techniques. You should have been told which instruction applies to you. Do not choose a weight-bearing plan based on the fact that you received crutches; ask your treating clinician if your instructions are unclear.

That fracture-specific advice is not a general schedule for other knee injuries.
