A cron job pairs a schedule with a command, so one short line can start backups, reports, cleanup tasks, or other backend work without a person launching it. But the schedule is only one part of a working task: the command must run in the right environment, handle missed or duplicate starts safely, and make its outcome visible.
Conventional cron uses five time fields followed by a command. The exact parsing rules, time zone, daylight-saving behavior, and reliability controls depend on the scheduler—so an expression that looks familiar is not automatically portable.
What does a cron expression mean?
A conventional crontab entry has five schedule fields followed by the command to run:

In Cronie, the minute, hour, and month fields must match. If both day-of-month and day-of-week are restricted rather than set to *, either field matching is sufficient. That OR behavior can surprise people expecting both restrictions to apply. Check the documentation for your target scheduler before deploying an expression. Cronie crontab(5) documentation
A system crontab may include a user field between the schedule and command; a per-user crontab typically does not. Do not assume that extensions, field ranges, names, or day-matching behavior are identical across cron implementations and hosted schedulers.
How do I run a cron job every day?
Choose the time and time zone first, then write and validate the schedule using the scheduler’s own reference. For instance, 0 3 * * * expresses 03:00 daily in a five-field cron format. This does not guarantee that every scheduler will interpret or execute it identically, nor does it define whether 03:00 means UTC or a local civil time.

- Decide what “daily” means. Use a stable zone such as UTC for globally consistent timing, or a named local zone if the work must follow local business hours.
- Check the target’s syntax. Confirm the number and meaning of fields, accepted values, day-of-week rules, and any scheduler-specific limits.
- Define the command’s runtime context. Ensure its executable, configuration, credentials, working directory, and dependencies are available where the scheduler runs.
- Test the command independently. Confirm it exits successfully and produces the intended result before attaching it to a recurring schedule.
- Verify an actual scheduled run. Check that the scheduler started the task and that the task completed successfully; a configured expression alone is not evidence of success.
Does cron use my local time?
There is no universal answer: the scheduler’s configuration determines the time zone. Cronie documents local-time behavior around daylight-saving transitions: a scheduled time in the spring-forward missing hour does not match, while a repeated wall-clock time during the fall-back transition can match twice. Platform-specific rules differ. Kubernetes uses the controller manager’s local time zone when a CronJob does not set .spec.timeZone; a valid zone such as Etc/UTC can be specified. If a configured zone becomes invalid during the resource’s lifetime, the API documentation says the controller stops creating new Jobs and emits an UnknownTimeZone event. GitHub Actions schedules use UTC by default and support an IANA time-zone name. Its documentation says that when a scheduled time falls in the skipped spring-forward hour, the run advances to the next valid time—for example, a 2:30 AM schedule moves to 3:00 AM. Why didn’t my cron job run?
A schedule can be valid while the task still fails to start or finish. Diagnose the stages separately rather than treating “the cron job” as one event:

Choose based on whether overlap, waiting, or replacement is safest for the work. Kubernetes CronJobs - Did the process start but fail? Inspect the task’s logs and exit status, then check its runtime dependencies and permissions. Scheduler history can show that a Job existed without proving that its application-level work succeeded.
- Was a run duplicated? Kubernetes warns that its controller can create multiple concurrent Jobs in some circumstances. Where duplicate work could cause damage, design the application to tolerate retries or duplicates—for example, with idempotent operations or an application-level lock.
What happens when a cron job is still running?
The result depends on the scheduler and its overlap policy. If a task takes longer than the interval between scheduled starts, the next occurrence may overlap, wait, be skipped, or replace an active run according to platform settings. Those choices have operational consequences: overlapping a report generation might waste resources, while skipping a critical reconciliation could leave data stale.
For Kubernetes CronJobs, set concurrencyPolicy deliberately. Allow permits concurrent Jobs; Forbid skips an occurrence if a prior Job is active; Replace replaces the active Job with a new one. None of these policies removes the need to consider duplicate execution, because Kubernetes documents that multiple concurrent Jobs can occur in certain circumstances. Kubernetes CronJobs

What does a Kubernetes CronJob add?
Kubernetes describes a CronJob as a resource that starts one-time Jobs on a repeating schedule, for work such as backups or report generation. Its documentation labels CronJob stable since Kubernetes v1.21 and the time-zone feature stable since v1.27; those version statements refer to the documented Kubernetes feature status. A minimal manifest has a schedule and a Job template. This illustrative fragment omits container details and other required workload configuration:

Kubernetes cautions that CronJobs have limitations and can, in some circumstances, create multiple concurrent Jobs. Treat the scheduler as a trigger, not as a guarantee of exactly-once application work.
How GitHub Actions schedules differ
GitHub Actions can start scheduled workflow runs using POSIX cron syntax, but its behavior belongs to the GitHub platform rather than to a host’s local cron daemon. Current documentation says schedules run in UTC by default, can use an IANA time zone, and have a minimum interval of five minutes. That makes scheduled workflows an option for some repository automation, not a drop-in replacement for an always-available application scheduler. Confirm that the workflow’s branch, execution environment, and platform-specific time handling suit the workload.
How can I tell whether scheduled work succeeded?
Track the full path from schedule to outcome: whether a run was due, whether it was created, whether the process started, and whether it finished with the expected result. Kubernetes exposes active Jobs, last schedule time, and last successful time, which can help explain what happened; job history alone will not alert a person when work never starts or fails. For important production tasks, make success and failure visible through application logs, a durable status record, and an alert or monitoring mechanism suited to the team’s needs. Alerting for missed runs is especially useful when “nothing happened” would otherwise be indistinguishable from “nothing was due.” This is an operational safeguard, not a feature guaranteed by a cron expression.
