Cloudinary builds software that helps businesses manage, transform, optimize, and deliver images and video on websites and apps. The “$2 billion” figure comes from a February 2022 secondary share transaction involving Blackstone Growth—not a confirmed current valuation or a conventional funding round that put $2 billion into the company.

What is Cloudinary?

Cloudinary is a visual media software company founded in 2012. The company says three developers started it after running into the time-consuming work of handling images and video in code. Its original developer-oriented tools have since expanded into a platform covering media management, transformations, optimization, delivery, digital asset management (DAM), and AI-enabled workflows.

In practical terms, a business can use Cloudinary to manage visual assets and prepare them for digital experiences. Developers can use its APIs and transformation capabilities to automate how media is handled and delivered; marketing and content teams can work with assets through broader management and workflow features. The platform spans both image and video work rather than focusing only on storing files or delivering web traffic.

Why was Cloudinary valued at $2 billion?

Cloudinary said on February 17, 2022, that Blackstone Growth invested in a secondary transaction that valued the company at $2 billion. In a secondary transaction, existing shares change hands; Cloudinary said Blackstone bought vested shares from employees. That is different from a primary financing round in which investors buy newly issued shares and the proceeds go to the company.

The figure therefore describes the valuation associated with that transaction in 2022. It should not be presented as Cloudinary’s current worth: the available company announcements do not establish a later valuation. Nor do they establish current revenue or provide audited financial statements from which to infer one.

What Cloudinary offers businesses

Image and video workflows

Cloudinary describes tools for uploading and managing media, transforming it, optimizing it, and delivering it to digital destinations. Transformations and optimization can help teams adapt assets to the needs of different pages, apps, and delivery contexts. The exact capabilities and product labels may evolve, so implementation decisions should be checked against current documentation.

Digital asset management and AI features

The broader platform includes digital asset management and AI features for media understanding and automation. Cloudinary’s newsroom has listed releases involving AI agents, AI moderation, automated video publishing, image-to-video, and agent-oriented development. These announcements indicate areas of product development, not a guarantee that every feature is available to every customer or plan.

Integrations and enterprise ecosystem

Cloudinary documents integrations across commerce and related systems, including an enhanced Shopify integration for Enterprise customers. Its partner materials describe work across commerce, content management systems (CMS), product information management (PIM), workflow, and software integrations. Separately, Akamai announced a strategic alliance under which its next-generation Video Manager would be powered by Cloudinary. These examples show documented ecosystem activity; they do not, by themselves, establish public referral commissions or an affiliate program.

How large is Cloudinary?

Cloudinary’s published scale figures have grown over time, but they come from the company and may reflect different definitions. In its 2022 valuation announcement, Cloudinary reported more than one million users, nearly 10,000 customers, and more than 60 billion assets managed. Its current About page, accessed in 2026, reports more than 4 million developers and 13,000 brands; its homepage reports 80 billion assets under management.

What customer results do—and don’t—show

Cloudinary’s customer directory includes case-study metrics, including a claim of 90% time savings from automated image transformation. That is a vendor-published customer example; the directory does not establish it as an independent benchmark or a typical result. Outcomes will depend on a customer’s existing workflow, implementation, and the work being measured.

Who might consider Cloudinary?

Cloudinary is most relevant to organizations that handle substantial volumes of images or video and need to coordinate management, transformation, optimization, and delivery. Its combination of APIs, DAM, and workflow capabilities may suit teams that want media operations to connect with their developer and content systems. A company evaluating it should map its needs to the particular products, integrations, and plan availability Cloudinary currently offers rather than assuming every capability is included everywhere.

Cloudinary’s About page names customers including Neiman Marcus, adidas, Fiverr, lastminute, and Mattel. Their presence on the page is evidence of named customer relationships, not proof that Cloudinary is suitable for every business or that those customers achieved a particular outcome.
