Claude Code permissions decide which tool actions can run immediately, which require your approval, and which are blocked. They govern actions such as editing files and running shell commands; they do not prove that Claude’s proposed change is correct or safe.

For most work, start in Plan mode when you want inspection without changes, use Accept edits when file changes are expected but commands should remain gated, and keep Manual approval for consequential operations. Use Auto only when its availability and safeguards are clear for your account and the working directory is appropriately isolated.

What Claude Code permissions control

Claude Code can use tools to inspect a project, modify files, and execute commands. Permissions are the control layer between Claude’s proposal and those tool actions. Depending on the selected mode and your saved rules, Claude may:

  • Read project files and directories.
  • Write, edit, rename, or delete files.
  • Run shell commands through its command tool.
  • Pause and ask you to approve an individual action.
  • Use a previously approved rule for a matching action.
  • Be prevented from using a tool at all.

These controls are not a correctness check. A command can be allowed and still remove the wrong files, expose data, change production resources, or produce an incorrect result. Review commands, paths, arguments, and diffs whenever the outcome matters.

Mode names and behavior are version-sensitive. Anthropic’s current Help Center FAQ lists Auto, Manual, Accept edits, and Plan; supported modes can also depend on organizational policy and model support.

Claude Code permission modes compared

The practical difference between modes is how much authority Claude receives before you must intervene.

Mode File edits Shell commands Safety check or approval behavior Best fit
Plan Read-only; no edits are applied Read-only investigation may be proposed or run according to the current implementation Claude proposes a plan and waits for approval before making changes Understanding an unfamiliar repository, designing a change, or reviewing risk first
Accept edits Edits are accepted without a separate prompt Commands still prompt for approval File-change interruptions are reduced while command execution remains gated Tasks that involve many known file edits but may need shell commands
Manual Asks before risky edits Asks before risky commands You approve consequential actions as they arise Production-adjacent work, migrations, unfamiliar scripts, or maximum review
Auto Automatically approved where supported Automatically approved where supported Uses a background safety check; availability depends on account, organization, and model support Long-running work in a controlled, isolated environment after you understand the task

“Automatically approved” does not mean unrestricted or risk-free. The exact set of actions covered by each mode can change, so check the current Anthropic documentation for the version and account you are using.

How to switch permission modes

Cycle modes during a session

Anthropic’s Help Center FAQ says you can press Shift+Tab to cycle through available permission modes in an active Claude Code session. The displayed label is the authority you should rely on; do not assume every installation exposes every mode.

  1. Start Claude Code in the project directory.
  2. Press Shift+Tab until the intended mode appears.
  3. Read the mode indicator before asking Claude to act.
  4. Switch back to a more restrictive mode before moving to a sensitive directory or a production-connected task.

Use Plan mode before making changes

Plan mode is useful when you need an inventory of the repository, an explanation of likely edits, or a proposed sequence of commands without immediately changing files. Ask Claude to identify files, dependencies, tests, and rollback concerns. Approve a plan only after checking its scope; approval of a plan is not approval of every future command unless the interface explicitly asks for that action.

Use Accept edits for file-focused work

Accept edits is a compromise for work such as applying a known refactor across many files. Claude can make the file changes without stopping for each edit, while command execution continues to require approval. Inspect the resulting diff and approve only commands whose working directory, arguments, and side effects you understand.

Use Manual for consequential operations

Manual mode keeps a decision point before risky edits or commands. Select it for database migrations, dependency upgrades, deployment scripts, authentication changes, bulk renames, or any repository containing secrets. Read the complete command rather than approving based on a short description.

Use Auto only in a controlled environment

Auto can reduce interruptions during a long task by making permission decisions with a documented background safety check, where your account and model support it. Before choosing it, remove unrelated credentials from the environment, confirm the working directory, and ensure you can restore the repository. It is not a replacement for sandboxing or human review.

Why Claude keeps asking permission for the same commands

The literal FAQ question “It keeps asking permission for the same commands” usually means the approval was temporary or the requested action does not match an existing rule. Anthropic’s FAQ says approvals last for the current session by default. Closing the session, changing the command shape, changing directories, or requesting a different tool can therefore produce another prompt.

Approve once for the current session

At a prompt, approve the specific action when you have inspected it. This normally covers the current session only. Treat the approval as authorization for that command, not as confirmation that future commands with similar wording are safe.

Choose “always allow” selectively

If the prompt offers always allow, use it only for a narrow, familiar operation. A rule that allows a broad shell pattern can authorize different arguments later, including destructive ones. Prefer a specific command, directory, and purpose over a wildcard.

Manage rules with /permissions

The /permissions command provides an in-session way to review or manage permission rules. Remove rules that are no longer needed, narrow rules that cover more paths or commands than intended, and check the list after changing modes.

Persist a reviewed pattern in settings

For recurring approvals, Anthropic documents adding a permission pattern to .claude/settings.json. Edit the file deliberately, keep patterns as narrow as practical, and review the file as part of code review because it changes what Claude can do in that project. The exact pattern syntax and precedence can vary by version and managed configuration; consult the current settings reference rather than inferring matching behavior.

Command-line permission controls

The CLI reference documents startup options that let you define authority before a session begins.

Option Purpose Safety consideration
--permission-mode Starts Claude Code in a selected permission mode Confirm the mode in the session before acting; names and availability can change
--allowedTools Restricts startup access to specified tools or patterns Allow only tools required for the task and verify the matching syntax
--disallowedTools Blocks specified tools or patterns Use it as an explicit deny boundary, then test that the intended tool is actually blocked
--add-dir Adds directories to the set Claude can work with Every added path expands the scope; use absolute, task-specific directories where possible
--dangerously-skip-permissions Skips permission prompts Anthropic labels this “use with caution”; it removes a key review point and should not be treated as a normal convenience flag

Option names and accepted values are CLI-version dependent. Run the help output for the installed version and compare it with Anthropic’s current CLI reference before putting a command into a script or team guide.

A safe workflow for real projects

  1. Start in the smallest useful directory. Open Claude Code in the repository or subdirectory that contains the task. Avoid adding home directories, credential stores, mounted drives, or unrelated repositories.
  2. Inspect before authorizing. Begin in Plan mode or Manual mode. Ask Claude to list the files it expects to read or change, the commands it expects to run, and any external services those commands contact.
  3. Check the proposed scope. Look for recursive deletion, force flags, network downloads, package installation, credential access, database writes, and commands that depend on environment variables.
  4. Make a checkpoint. Commit or otherwise back up the current state before a broad edit. A clean working tree makes the resulting diff and rollback easier to evaluate.
  5. Choose the least authority that works. Keep Plan for investigation, Manual for risky operations, and Accept edits for predictable file changes. Move to Auto only when the task is isolated and interruptions create a genuine operational problem.
  6. Approve narrowly. When prompted, read the full path and arguments. Reject and rephrase requests that are broader than the task.
  7. Inspect results. Review the diff, generated files, logs, test output, and changed permissions. Run tests independently when the result affects users or deployment.
  8. Clean up authority. Remove temporary rules, switch back to a restrictive mode, and close the session when the task is complete.

Permissions versus sandboxing

Permission modes answer, “Does Claude need my approval for this tool action?” Sandboxing answers, “What can the process reach even if it is allowed to run?” Anthropic describes sandboxing for Bash as adding two boundaries: filesystem isolation and network isolation.

Filesystem boundary

A filesystem sandbox can restrict which paths a command can read or write. This limits the damage from an incorrect path or an overbroad script, but it does not make every command safe inside the permitted area. A destructive command in the project directory can still destroy the project.

Network boundary

A network sandbox can restrict outbound connections. That can prevent an otherwise permitted command from downloading code or sending data, depending on the platform and configuration. Check the current operating-system instructions because supported isolation features differ.

Use both controls together

Sandboxing is an additional execution boundary, not a substitute for reviewing prompts and diffs. Conversely, approval prompts are not a substitute for limiting filesystem and network reach. Configure the sandbox first, then select a permission mode appropriate to the remaining scope.

Why skipping prompts is risky

The CLI flag --dangerously-skip-permissions is explicitly presented as a prompt-skipping option. Anthropic’s “Auto mode for Claude Code” announcement states: “While some developers choose to bypass permission checks with –dangerously-skip-permissions, skipping permissions can result in dangerous and destructive outcomes and should not be used outside of isolated environments.”

  • 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Do not use the flag merely to avoid repetitive approvals. If you must run an unattended job, isolate the environment, limit its filesystem and network access, remove credentials that are not required, use disposable data, and keep a tested recovery path. A container or temporary virtual machine reduces exposure but is not proof that the job is harmless.

Practical decisions by task

Task Starting mode What to verify before approving
Understand an unfamiliar codebase Plan Requested directories, generated plan, and whether any command would write files
Apply a mechanical formatting change Accept edits Diff scope, excluded files, and any formatter command or configuration change
Upgrade dependencies Manual Package sources, lockfile changes, install scripts, network access, and test results
Run a database migration Manual Target environment, backup, transaction behavior, irreversible steps, and rollback
Long-running isolated test generation Auto only if supported and isolated Sandbox boundaries, disposable credentials, resource limits, and output review
Work near production credentials or deployment Manual Every command, environment variable, destination, and confirmation from the responsible operator

Troubleshooting permission behavior

The mode you expect is missing

Availability can depend on organization settings and supported models. Confirm the signed-in account, the selected model, and the current version of Claude Code. A managed policy may remove or constrain modes.

A command is still blocked after you allowed a tool

Check whether the request uses a different tool, path, working directory, or argument pattern. Review /permissions and the project’s .claude/settings.json. Do not widen a rule until you know which part failed to match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A rule appears too permissive

Remove it immediately, return to Manual or Plan mode, and inspect the settings file for broad wildcards or parent directories. Recreate a narrower rule only after testing it with a harmless command.

Claude proposes an unsafe action even though permissions work

Reject the action. Permissions determine whether an action can run; they do not validate its intent, correctness, or impact. Ask for a safer alternative, such as a dry run, a limited path, a transaction, or a generated diff before execution.

Keeping permission configuration maintainable

  • Document why each persistent rule exists and which directory it covers.
  • Keep project settings under version control and review changes to them like code.
  • Prefer one narrowly scoped rule over a broad wildcard that covers many commands.
  • Separate experimental work from repositories containing secrets or production credentials.
  • Recheck the official FAQ and CLI reference after upgrades because mode labels, flags, and matching behavior can change.
  • Teach teammates which mode is expected for planning, editing, testing, and deployment so approvals are consistent.

Bottom line

Claude Code permissions are an authorization system, not a guarantee of safe output. Use Plan to understand a task, Manual to review consequential actions, Accept edits when file changes are predictable but commands should remain gated, and Auto only with documented support and strong isolation. Keep recurring rules narrow, use sandbox boundaries in addition to prompts, and treat prompt-skipping flags as an exceptional measure rather than a shortcut.
