Changing the country or region for an Apple Account (the current name for an Apple ID) affects more than the App Store storefront. It can change which apps and media are available, require a payment method and billing address from the destination, interrupt subscriptions, and alter access to Family Sharing purchases. Apple may refuse the change until you clear account balance, subscriptions, pre-orders, rentals, refunds, and other pending activity.
Prepare the account before switching, download content you may need, check Family Sharing, and have destination-region billing details ready. The exact result depends on the country you are leaving, the country you are entering, and the services you use.
What changes immediately when you switch regions?
The country or region setting determines which Apple storefront and related services your account can use. Apple describes the change as a move to a different regional environment, not as a simple display preference. The practical effects fall into four areas: catalog availability, subscriptions, billing, and Family Sharing.

These are possible effects, not a promise that every previous purchase disappears. Apple’s general country-change guidance does not say that all purchased content is removed from your account or that every downloaded file becomes unusable. It does recommend downloading important content to devices before switching because regional availability can differ afterward.

Why Apple may block the change
Apple requires several account conditions to be satisfied before it will process a country or region change. Check each one before opening the settings screen.
Unspent Apple Account balance
Spend the remaining balance on your Apple Account if possible. Even a small amount can block the move when it is less than the price of any item available to buy. Apple says to contact Apple Support when the balance is too small to spend; do not assume it will be converted automatically or refunded.
Subscriptions that have not ended
Cancel subscriptions that Apple identifies as blocking a country or region change. Cancellation alone may not be enough: wait until the current subscription period ends. This can include services billed through Apple as well as other memberships shown in your account.

Pending transactions and entitlements
Let memberships, pre-orders, movie rentals, Season Passes, and pending refunds complete. Apple says a pre-order can be cancelled if necessary. A rental or Season Pass that is still active may need to reach its end before the account can move.
Family Sharing membership
Being in a Family Sharing group can prevent a region change. Review whether you are an organizer or a member, whether purchase sharing is important to your household, and whether other members rely on purchases made through your account.
How content availability can differ
Apple licenses and distributes content by country. A title, app, book, or service offered in one storefront may not be offered in another. The destination’s catalog can therefore be smaller, larger, or simply different from the one you used before.

Apps
Some apps are released only in particular markets or are withdrawn when their publisher does not support a region. If an app was obtained through another Family Sharing member, the change can also affect the sharing relationship even if the app remains listed in the destination store.
Music, films, television, and books
Apple specifically warns that music, films, television programmes or shows, and books may not be available after the move. Before changing regions, download media you may want available offline to the devices on which you intend to use it. This is a precaution against catalog differences; it is not proof that every prior purchase will be deleted.
Services and features
Apple services can have different availability, billing, and eligibility rules by region. The general country-change page does not provide a universal catalog comparison, so check the destination-specific information for the particular service you need rather than assuming that a service will carry over unchanged.
Payment methods and billing after the move
Apple may ask for a valid payment method for the new country or region during the change. The accepted cards, account-based methods, wallets, and other options vary by destination. Use Apple’s current payment-method list for the destination and enter a billing address that matches the records held by your financial institution.
What to prepare
- A payment method accepted in the destination region.
- The billing name and address associated with that method.
- Any verification information requested by the payment provider.
- A plan for handling subscriptions that are unavailable or priced differently after the move.
A payment method that worked in your old country is not guaranteed to work in the new one. If setup fails, first confirm that Apple accepts that type of payment in the destination and then check every billing field against the issuer’s records.

Family Sharing and shared purchases
Family Sharing has a stricter regional rule than ordinary account use: members need the same country or region to share purchases. Changing one member’s region can therefore change what the entire group can access.

Effects on the person changing region
Apple says a member who changes country or region might lose access to purchases shared by other family members. Apps installed through another member’s purchase sharing may also stop working. This is separate from the question of whether the changer’s own purchases remain associated with the account.
Questions to settle with the family first
- Are you using apps, books, music, films, or television purchases made by another member?
- Will everyone continue using the same country or region?
- Does the organizer need to change region, or can the move be made by a separate account?
- Do family members need to download shared content before the change?
If shared purchases are essential, resolve the regional mismatch before switching. Apple’s Family Sharing guidance is the authority for the current behavior on your devices and operating-system version.
Apple One and iCloud+ need separate planning
Apple’s country-change guidance calls out Apple One and iCloud+ because cancelling them can affect more than storefront access. If you cancel either service to permit the move, consult Apple’s guidance about what happens to information stored in iCloud before proceeding.

Do not assume the same plan, price, storage tier, or bundle exists in every country. The guidance does not say that stored iCloud information is automatically deleted, so do not treat cancellation as an instruction to erase your data; review Apple’s storage-specific instructions instead.
Preparation checklist before changing country or region
Complete this checklist while you still have access to the old storefront.
- Check your Apple Account balance. Spend it where possible. If a small remainder cannot buy anything, contact Apple Support to clear it.
- Review subscriptions. Cancel any subscription that blocks a country or region change, then wait for its paid period to end.
- Resolve pending activity. Finish or cancel pre-orders and wait for memberships, rentals, Season Passes, and refunds to complete.
- Review Family Sharing. Decide whether changing region will remove access to shared purchases or affect apps installed through sharing.
- Download important content. Save apps and media to the devices where you may need them, because the destination catalog may differ.
- Prepare destination billing details. Obtain an accepted payment method and use its matching billing address.
- Check Apple One and iCloud+. If cancellation is required, read Apple’s storage guidance and plan for any resubscription in the new region.

Apple’s support article published October 1, 2026, lists the following routes. Interface labels can change between operating-system and support-page versions; if a label differs, follow the equivalent prompt shown after signing in.

iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name.
- Open Media & Purchases.
- Choose Country/Region.
- Select the destination country or region.
- Review and agree to the terms.
- Enter the requested payment method and billing details.
Mac
- Open Apple Music or Apple TV.
- Choose Account, then Account Settings.
- Find Country/Region.
- Select the destination and continue through the terms and payment prompts.
Windows
- Open Apple Music or Apple TV.
- Select your account name or sign in.
- Choose View My Account.
- Select Change Country or Region.
- Follow the prompts for the destination, terms, and billing information.
Web
- Sign in at account.apple.com.
- Open Personal Information.
- Choose Country/Region.
- Select the destination and complete the requested confirmation and payment details.
Troubleshooting a country or region change
The option is unavailable
Return to the preparation checklist. Look specifically for an active subscription, unspent balance, pending pre-order, rental, Season Pass, membership, or refund. Then check whether you belong to Family Sharing. Apple may continue to block the change until the relevant period ends, even after you request cancellation.
A small balance remains
When the remainder is lower than the price of every available item, Apple directs you to contact Apple Support. Gift cards and redeemed balances generally cannot be returned for cash except where required by law, and any legally permitted refund is jurisdiction-dependent. Do not buy a gift card as a way to manufacture a zero balance or assume that Apple will refund it.
The payment method is rejected
Verify that the method is accepted in the destination country, that the billing address is entered in the destination format, and that the details match the financial institution’s records. A card or payment option that worked in the previous region may not be supported after the move.
Shared apps or purchases are missing
Check whether the item came from another Family Sharing member. Purchase sharing requires the same country or region, and Apple warns that changing region can remove access to those shared purchases or make shared-installed apps stop working. The family may need to reassess purchase sharing after the move.
How to decide whether changing region is worth it
Before committing, compare the old and new regions on the factors that affect your actual use:
- Whether the apps, media, books, and services you depend on are offered in the destination.
- Which payment methods and billing addresses Apple accepts there.
- Whether your subscriptions, Apple One, and iCloud+ are available and on acceptable terms.
- Whether Family Sharing purchases will remain usable for everyone who relies on them.
- Whether you can complete all pending transactions and clear the account balance.
If the move is temporary, such as travel, changing the account may create more disruption than benefit. If you have permanently relocated and can satisfy the requirements, completing the preparation first reduces the chance of losing access to needed content or being stopped by an unresolved account item.
