TV sound that cuts in and out can come from a setting, a broadcast or streaming source, a loose cable, a wireless connection, an external audio device, or the TV itself. The quickest way to narrow it down is to compare more than one source, check which speaker path is affected, and run the TV’s built-in sound test if available. These are possible causes, not a ranked list; the available manufacturer guidance does not establish which cause is most common.
Start by identifying where the sound drops out
Before changing settings or replacing equipment, note the pattern. Does the audio cut out on one channel, one streaming app, one HDMI input, or every source? Does it happen through the TV speakers, a soundbar, Bluetooth headphones, or a wireless subwoofer? Note whether the picture remains stable and whether the problem began after a device, cable, or setting changed.
These comparisons help separate a source problem from an audio-output or TV-side problem. They do not prove a cause on their own, but they tell you what to test next.

- Several sources and outputs: Check TV settings and run the TV’s sound test before seeking service.
LG’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends comparing sources and using the TV’s sound diagnosis where the model offers it: LG support and troubleshooting.

Check mute, volume, and selected sound output
Confirm that the TV is not muted and that its selected sound output matches the device you intend to use. If you are listening through a set-top box, check that device’s mute and volume controls; if you are using a soundbar, check its controls and selected input as well. A TV can continue routing sound to an external device even after that device has been disconnected.
Menu names and locations vary by TV model and software version. Use the manual for your specific set rather than assuming a particular menu path.

Compare sources and run the TV sound test
Try another channel, app, or input
Switch to another channel, open a built-in app, or try a different connected source. If the dropout happens only on one channel, ask the broadcaster or TV service provider about reception or signal trouble. If it follows one external box, restart that box and inspect its settings and connection before concluding the TV is at fault.

Look in the TV’s sound settings or support/diagnostics area for a sound test or self-diagnosis option. Exact labels and menu paths depend on the model. LG says a normal test can help point away from the TV speakers and toward the broadcast or connected peripheral; if the test reproduces the problem, follow the TV’s diagnosis and service advice. Check the model’s manual for the correct procedure. Further guidance is available from LG support.

Inspect HDMI and other wired connections
If the affected path uses HDMI, make sure the cable is firmly connected at both the TV and the source device or soundbar. Disconnect and reconnect both ends. If the dropout continues on that path, try a known-good HDMI cable that is compatible with the equipment. Testing another cable is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix: it will not resolve a broadcast problem, incorrect setting, Bluetooth fault, or internal TV issue.
For an optical connection, check that the cable is securely seated and that the TV is configured to send audio to the connected wired speaker. Follow both devices’ manuals for setup details. LG also recommends power-cycling the TV and connected device during troubleshooting; use each device’s normal restart or power procedure. LG’s support pages provide model-specific help.

Troubleshoot Bluetooth and wireless audio separately
For Bluetooth headphones or a speaker, confirm that the device is paired and selected as the TV’s audio output. If the connection is unreliable, remove the pairing and pair the device again if the TV and speaker manuals support that procedure. When possible, compare Bluetooth with another audio path or another device to see whether the dropout follows the wireless connection.
Distance, obstacles, and nearby wireless equipment can affect a wireless link. LG’s instructions for its soundbars recommend keeping the bar at least 3 feet (1 m) from the Wi-Fi router and removing obstacles between the bar and the connected device when diagnosing Bluetooth dropouts. This is model-specific advice, not a universal guarantee: LG support.

Distinguish a subwoofer dropout from a Bluetooth dropout
A wireless subwoofer losing sound is not necessarily the same problem as the TV losing its Bluetooth connection to a soundbar. Check the audio system maker’s instructions for the exact model before resetting or re-pairing components. Reset steps can differ between models. LG treats wireless subwoofer dropouts as a separate troubleshooting issue: LG support.
Decide whether the TV or another device needs service
Contact the TV manufacturer or a qualified technician if the TV’s own sound test reproduces the dropout, the problem continues across multiple sources, or the checks above do not isolate an external device. If the fault follows a set-top box, soundbar, speaker, or other connected device, consult that device’s manufacturer or service provider instead. A dropout alone does not establish that a particular TV component has failed.
