The July 19, 2024, global outage was triggered by a faulty CrowdStrike Falcon security-content update for Windows—not by a Microsoft-issued Windows update. The defect crashed some Windows computers and disrupted services that depended on them, including flights, hospital operations and some local emergency call centers.
What happened in the CrowdStrike outage?
At 04:09 UTC on July 19, 2024, CrowdStrike released a regular Falcon sensor configuration update for Windows. CrowdStrike said the update triggered a logic error that caused affected computers to crash with a blue screen. It remediated the faulty content at 05:27 UTC, but making the content fix available did not automatically restart or repair every affected machine.
This was a Rapid Response Content update interpreted by the Falcon sensor, not a new release of the sensor software itself. CrowdStrike’s Channel File 291 concerned how Falcon inspected Windows named-pipe activity. Although the file had a .sys extension, CrowdStrike said that did not mean the channel file itself was a kernel driver.

Which computers were at risk?
CrowdStrike said Windows systems running Falcon Sensor version 7.11 or later that were online during the update interval might have been affected. CISA described the affected scope as Windows 10 and later, and said Mac and Linux hosts were not affected. The incident was not a malicious cyberattack, although scammers later used the disruption as a pretext for phishing and fake support messages.

Why did the update crash Windows?
CrowdStrike’s August 6, 2024, root-cause analysis traced the crash to a mismatch between the update’s input definition and the sensor’s data. A new template type defined 21 input fields, but the sensor integration supplied only 20 values to the component that interpreted the content.
Earlier tests and deployments used a wildcard criterion for the missing 21st field, so they did not trigger the defect. The July 19 content included a new template instance with a non-wildcard match for that field. When Windows generated the relevant notification, the interpreter tried to inspect a 21st value that was not present. That out-of-bounds memory read caused the system crash.
CrowdStrike described the failure as the combination of the input-count mismatch, a latent bounds-checking flaw in the interpreter, and tests that did not cover a non-wildcard criterion in that field. In other words, the update exposed a software defect because the validation and test process had not exercised that particular combination.

What did CrowdStrike say it changed?
In its RCA, CrowdStrike listed compile-time checks for input counts, runtime bounds checks, broader tests that include non-wildcard criteria, additional content validation, and staged deployment with canary checks and bake-in time. It also said it had added customer control over where and when Rapid Response Content updates are deployed, with more granular controls planned. These are measures CrowdStrike reported; they are not an independent assessment of how effective the changes are.
How widespread were the effects?
Microsoft estimated that 8.5 million Windows devices were affected—less than one percent of all Windows machines. Microsoft cautioned that the proportion did not capture the full societal and economic impact: enterprises often rely on affected systems to run critical services.
The disruption reached beyond the number of crashed devices. HHS reported that flights were grounded and hospitals, banks, media outlets, small businesses and other services were disrupted. The American Hospital Association said the effects varied widely: some hospitals reported little or no impact, while others faced problems with medical technology, communications or third-party providers. Some clinical procedures were delayed, diverted or canceled. The AHA also reported indirect effects from local emergency call centers being down.

Those reports establish that emergency-call and essential-service disruptions occurred, but they do not provide a comprehensive count of affected 911 centers, jurisdictions, airlines or hospitals. Nor did every organization experience the same level of disruption.
What do the reported figures measure?
| Figure | Source and date | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| 8.5 million devices; less than 1% of Windows machines | Microsoft, 2024 | Microsoft’s estimate of affected Windows devices and their share of Windows machines overall. |
| Approximately 99% of Windows sensors online | CrowdStrike, July 29, 2024 | CrowdStrike’s week-over-week sensor-connection comparison with its pre-update baseline. The company noted typical week-over-week connection variance of about 1%; this metric does not establish that every affected organization had restored every service. |
How were affected computers and services restored?
Recovery required more than removing the faulty content: crashed endpoints and the services that depended on them also had to be brought back. Microsoft said it coordinated with CrowdStrike and other cloud providers and deployed hundreds of engineers to help customers restore service.
For Windows 10 and Windows 11 endpoints, Microsoft Support’s official recovery guidance described entering Safe Mode, locating matching C-00000291*.sys files in the CrowdStrike directory, and deleting them. Microsoft also released a USB tool to help automate the manual repair. This is historical guidance for the incident, not a universal fix for every device or a substitute for an organization’s current IT instructions. Microsoft provides separate guidance for servers; endpoint steps should not be assumed to apply to them.

If a device is still affected, use current instructions from Microsoft or CrowdStrike and involve the organization’s IT or incident-response team where applicable. Avoid unsolicited offers to repair a computer, unexpected recovery links, or messages asking for credentials: CISA and HHS warned that opportunistic actors exploited the outage with phishing and social engineering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should organizations take from the outage?
The incident showed how a routine security-content update can have consequences across dependent services when an error reaches a large number of endpoints. Microsoft’s David Weston described the event as demonstrating the “interconnected nature” of global cloud providers, software platforms, security vendors and customers. The practical lesson is to plan both for safer change deployment and for operating when a key system is unavailable.
Quick Recap
- Validate updates against edge cases. CrowdStrike’s RCA points to the importance of checking input definitions and testing criteria combinations that may not appear in ordinary test data.
- Limit exposure during rollout. Staged deployment, canary checks and time to observe results can help identify failures before a change reaches a wider fleet. Customer control over update timing can also matter when an organization needs to manage its own deployment windows.
- Prepare recovery paths. Keep recovery procedures and suitable recovery media available, and make sure staff know which official instructions apply to endpoints versus servers.
- Test continuity plans. The AHA urged healthcare organizations to review continuity procedures and test response plans. Organizations should consider how essential work will continue if endpoints, communications or third-party services become unavailable.
- Communicate through trusted channels. Identify official vendor and government channels in advance so staff can distinguish legitimate recovery instructions from scam messages during a disruption.
