ChatGPT Free now includes much more than basic text chat: OpenAI currently lists web search, data analysis, file and image uploads, image creation, GPT discovery and use, and Library storage among its Free features. OpenAI also says everyday text chats are unlimited, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. But that does not mean every tool is unlimited, and personal Free accounts cannot create or publish GPTs.
What can you do with ChatGPT for free now?
As currently listed in OpenAI’s Free Tier FAQ, Free users can use ChatGPT for these tasks:
- Search the web for up-to-date information.
- Analyze data you provide.
- Upload files and images for ChatGPT to work with.
- Create images from prompts.
- Discover and use GPTs made by others.
- Store files in Library, with 500 MB of storage listed by OpenAI.
Availability and the default model can change, so this is a snapshot of OpenAI’s listed Free features, not a permanent guarantee. OpenAI’s August 6, 2026 announcement says GPT-5.6 Luna became the updated default model for Free users and added a Think button for questions that need more thought. Is ChatGPT Free actually unlimited?
OpenAI describes everyday text chats as unlimited, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. Tool use is different: data analysis, file and image uploads, and image creation have separate limits. If you reach one, ChatGPT displays a notice and indicates when access resets, according to the Free Tier FAQ.

OpenAI does not publish a stable, complete quota table for every Free tool, account, or region in that FAQ. There is no reliable universal message count or reset interval to apply to all users. Check the notice in ChatGPT and the current official help information for the limit affecting your account.
Can Free users create their own GPTs?
Free users can find and use GPTs, but personal Free accounts cannot create or publish new GPTs. OpenAI lists GPT discovery and use as Free features; its GPT creation help article explains the creation restriction.

What has changed recently—and what may vary?
Model and text-chat access
On August 6, 2026, OpenAI announced GPT-5.6 Luna as the updated default for Free users, expanded access to unlimited text chats, and the Think button. These are details of that dated announcement, not a promise that the model, defaults, or limits will never change. OpenAI says tool limits remain in place.
Inline web images
On May 12, 2026, OpenAI said it was rolling out more inline web images to Free users globally on web and iOS for responses using 5.5-Instant. That claim is specific to the announced date, platforms, and model. Details appear in OpenAI’s release notes.
Ads test
On February 9, 2026, OpenAI said it was starting a U.S. ads test for a subset of logged-in adults on Free and Go. In that test, ads were labeled and visually separated from organic answers; OpenAI said paid plans did not have ads. This does not establish that all Free users see ads or that the test’s scope is unchanged. OpenAI’s release notes describe the dated test.

Free may be enough if your use is mostly text chat and you rarely hit tool limits. If uploads, image generation, or data analysis regularly interrupt your work, OpenAI describes ChatGPT Go as including Free features with expanded access to eligible tools, more uploads and image generation, more frequent advanced data analysis, and longer memory. The Go help article also lists projects, tasks, custom GPTs, and Library, subject to availability and storage limits. OpenAI’s August 6, 2026 announcement also says, “Every week, 1 billion people turn to ChatGPT for everything from quick questions and web searches to planning, research, advice, and complex decisions.” That is a company-reported figure, not an independent usage measurement.
