For old DVDs, the best next step depends on whether the disc works, whether anyone wants it, and what your local waste program accepts. Keep titles you value, offer usable copies for reuse, and check local rules before recycling or throwing away discs and cases. Do not assume curbside recycling accepts them.
How to decide what to do with old DVDs
- Keep the titles you value. Set aside films, family recordings, performances, out-of-print releases, and special editions you expect to watch or preserve.
- Pass along working copies. Offer them to friends or neighbors, list them for sale, or ask a local charity shop or secondhand media store whether it accepts DVDs. Acceptance and demand vary; listing a disc does not guarantee it will sell.
- Check local disposal guidance. Ask your waste authority about discs and cases separately before using a recycling bin or making a trip to a facility.
- Handle data-bearing discs with privacy in mind. Home movies and discs containing personal files are different from commercial movie DVDs; consult the relevant local secure-disposal guidance.
These options depend on condition, recipient interest, local collection rules, and whether the disc contains private data. A scratched or incomplete disc may have fewer reuse options, while a complete working copy may be easier to pass on.
Where can you give away, sell, or donate DVDs?
Start with people who might want the title, then check local reuse channels. Suffolk Recycling suggests charity shops, online reuse networks, car-boot or jumble sales, online marketplaces, and giving discs to people you know. - Try resale: A secondhand media shop or online listing may suit complete, working DVDs, but the sources establish selling as an option—not a guaranteed buyer or price.
- Ask before donating: Contact the charity shop first. Its available space, policies, and interest in particular titles can affect whether it accepts them.
Can DVDs and their cases be recycled?
There is no single recycling rule that applies everywhere in the cited guidance. Some places offer collection routes; others direct residents to general waste. The rules for the disc may differ from those for the plastic case, so check both with your local waste authority before putting either in a bin.

These examples are local or regional instructions, not a universal answer. Confirm current acceptance for both discs and cases with your own authority; do not put DVDs in curbside recycling unless that authority says to.
Why recycling instructions differ
DVDs consist predominantly of polycarbonate. Germany’s Environment Agency recommends take-back systems or the recyclable-material collection route in its German guidance and notes that recovered polycarbonate can be used in applications including medical technology, automotive, and computer industries. That material-recovery potential does not mean every municipality accepts discs; the collection route described is Germany-specific. German Environment Agency guidance.

How should you dispose of DVDs containing personal data?
For a disc holding home movies or personal files, use local privacy guidance rather than treating it like an ordinary movie disc. The Swiss Federal Office for the Environment advises: “To ensure that the data on the discs being disposed of cannot be read, the metal coating on the upper side of the disc must be rubbed off.” This is Swiss guidance, not a universal legal requirement. How can you store the DVDs you decide to keep?
If you want to reduce shelf clutter, a binder with compatible sleeves can consolidate discs. Keeping original cases preserves their artwork and packaging; moving discs to sleeves can separate them from that material, so decide whether compact storage is worth the trade-off.
