You can still use a Kindle that has lost Store access as a local e-reader: keep reading books already downloaded, or transfer compatible personal files over USB. What works depends on the exact model, its registration status, file format, and cable. A USB transfer can add local files; it cannot restore discontinued Amazon services.

Which Kindle models are affected?

“Old Kindle” does not identify a specific generation. TechRadar reported on April 8, 2026, that Amazon would end support on May 20, 2026, for Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 or earlier. The report said affected devices would no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download additional books on the device. This is secondary reporting, not a primary Amazon notice, so check your exact model and account status rather than assuming every older Kindle is affected. Amazon also notes that not every generation was available in every marketplace.

To identify your e-reader, use Amazon’s Kindle identification guide, which explains how to find Device Info and distinguish generations. The model matters for its connector, file compatibility, and whether account services remain available.

What can you still do with it?

Read books and documents already stored on it

If the Kindle powers on, books and documents saved locally may remain readable without Store access. Do not assume you can still download or re-deliver purchased books from your Amazon account, borrow titles, register the device, or sync its library; availability depends on the model and current Amazon service status. Amazon’s instructions for manually sending a book to a Kindle are available here, but they do not establish that delivery will work for a device affected by the reported cutoff.

Copy compatible personal files over USB

Amazon says Kindle models released before 2024 generally do not need a separate application for USB file transfer, with Kindle Scribe as an exception. Connect the reader to a computer using a data-capable cable, copy a compatible file to the Kindle’s storage, and safely eject the device. Connector type, storage folders, computer steps, and supported formats vary by model; consult Amazon’s USB transfer instructions for the specific device.

Amazon lists HTML, RTF, TXT, JPEG, JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP, PDF, and EPUB for its Send to Kindle service. That cloud-service list is not a guarantee that every format works by direct USB transfer on every legacy Kindle. If a file does not show up or display properly, check the model’s format support and try a compatible alternative. Use DRM-free files you own or have permission to copy; do not remove DRM or copy books without authorization. Amazon’s Send to Kindle format guidance describes the listed service formats.

Check the Kindle’s port before choosing a cable. A charge-only cable will not transfer files, and even a working data cable will not restore Store access.

Resolve ordinary registration problems, if registration is still supported

For a routine sign-in or registration failure, Amazon recommends checking the Kindle’s displayed time, installing available software updates, connecting to Wi-Fi, confirming your Amazon credentials, and restarting the device. Follow Amazon’s registration troubleshooting steps. These checks can address ordinary setup problems, but cannot undo a discontinued service policy.

Should you reset, sell, gift, or recycle it?

Do not factory-reset a Kindle casually if you still rely on its downloaded books, unsynced content, or registration. Amazon says a factory reset removes personal data, downloaded content, and content that has not synced, then deregisters the device. Amazon also says the Kindle must be registered again for use. If the model can no longer be registered, a reset could leave the next owner unable to use it as expected. Save anything you need and verify the device’s status first. See Amazon’s factory-reset instructions and deregistration guidance.

If you want to pass the Kindle on, make its Store and registration limitations clear to the recipient. Amazon points owners to Manage Your Devices for device-specific trade-in and recycling information; eligibility and availability may vary by location. Check the current device software security updates and recycling guidance before deciding. A replacement e-reader is an option if you want current supported Store access, not a prerequisite for continuing to read files already on the old device.

Choose the next step

  • It works and contains books you want to read: keep using it locally and avoid resetting while you depend on those files or its current registration.
  • You have personal documents or DRM-free books: check the Kindle’s model and port, then try a data-capable USB cable and a format compatible with that device.
  • You cannot sign in or register: check time, updates, Wi-Fi, credentials, and restart; then confirm whether the model falls within the reported cutoff group.
  • You need current Store access: consider a supported replacement and check local trade-in or recycling options.
  • You plan to sell or give it away: understand what a reset erases and whether registration is still available before deregistering or wiping it.
