A media server can appear broken even while its process is still running: a storage mount may be missing, a scheduled cleanup may run at the wrong time, playback may fail during transcoding, or remote traffic may never reach the server. The title alone does not establish which of these happened—or that a 14-day idle period caused a failure. Use the symptoms and logs to locate the layer that stopped working.
Start by identifying what “broken” means
Before restarting services or rescanning a library, record the exact symptom and where it occurs. A missing title, a failed stream, and a server that cannot be reached point to different parts of the system.
- Library items disappeared: check that the media path is mounted and readable, then inspect scheduled-task timing and logs.
- The server opens but playback fails: inspect the server log and, if transcoding was attempted, the FFmpeg log.
- Playback works at home but not remotely: investigate router and port-forwarding configuration.
- No connection appears in server logs: the request may not have reached the media server; check the client address, DNS, firewall, and network path.
These are documented troubleshooting paths for Jellyfin, not evidence that any one problem is common or that it occurred in this case. Jellyfin’s troubleshooting guide recommends using logs and access patterns to narrow the cause.

A running process is not the same as a usable media server. Jellyfin’s /health endpoint checks HTTP and database connectivity, while its optional /metrics endpoint exposes Prometheus-compatible metrics. Metrics are disabled by default; if enabled, restrict access, for example through a reverse proxy that permits only internal monitoring traffic. See Jellyfin’s monitoring documentation.

It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Be careful with automated watchdogs: Jellyfin cautions that the health endpoint may not behave as expected during startup while database migrations are running. A monitor that treats a temporary startup response as a permanent failure could trigger unnecessary restarts. Allow for startup and migrations before deciding the service is unhealthy.
Verify storage before rescanning or cleaning the library
Jellyfin reads media from the filesystem; network storage is mounted by the operating system. Its database should be stored locally. If a network share or other media mount is unavailable, the application can still be running while the library appears incomplete.

There is a particularly consequential timing issue: Jellyfin documents that scheduled maintenance can remove library items if media storage is unavailable when the task runs. Its scheduled tasks guidance also warns that “Clean up collections and playlists” can lose playlists when storage is unmounted at task time. Before concluding that media was deleted, confirm the mount is present and readable, then review task timing and logs. Ensure mounts are ready before cleanup tasks are allowed to run.
Separate application storage from media storage
Jellyfin recommends local storage for its database and SSD storage for Jellyfin’s own files, which can involve random access. Media files may reside on suitable network storage. Its current storage documentation says a moderate-sized library database can range from 10 to 100 GB; that is the Jellyfin Project’s guidance, accessed 2026-10-07, not a universal capacity requirement or independent measurement. Transcoding also uses temporary space, and the amount depends on the source media and concurrent activity. See Jellyfin’s storage guidance and its hardware selection recommendations.

Determine whether library file watching stopped
File watchers can update a library when files change, but their behavior depends on the filesystem and operating system. Jellyfin uses Linux inotify; its troubleshooting documentation notes that NFS and rclone do not support inotify directly. It also gives an example error when the configured user limit of 8192 watches is reached. That figure describes an example logged condition, not how often it occurs.
If new or changed files are not appearing, check whether the library path uses a filesystem that supports the watcher, review Jellyfin logs for watcher errors, and inspect the host’s watch limits. A manual library scan can help distinguish a watcher problem from missing or inaccessible files, but it does not fix an unavailable mount. Jellyfin’s troubleshooting guide documents these filesystem limitations.

Use playback logs to isolate transcoding failures
A playback failure can originate with the client’s codec support, resolution, bitrate, the server’s transcoder, a driver, or available resources. A client that can directly play a file may behave differently from one that requires transcoding. Hardware acceleration also depends on compatible hardware and correct software configuration; it is not guaranteed merely because the server has a capable GPU.
For a failed stream, check the server logs first and then inspect FFmpeg logs when transcoding is involved. Note whether the problem affects one client or all clients, and whether the same media plays through direct play. Those distinctions help separate a client/profile issue from a transcoder or host problem. Jellyfin’s transcoding documentation explains client constraints and acceleration, while its troubleshooting guide identifies the relevant logs.

Compare local and remote access
Test from a device on the same local network before changing server settings. If local HTTP access works but HTTPS does not, certificate configuration may be involved. If local access works but access from outside the network fails, Jellyfin points to router and port-forwarding configuration as a place to investigate. If there are no web-traffic log entries for an attempted connection, the request may have failed before reaching Jellyfin.
For Plex, the server status and dashboard pages provide real-time and historical activity views, with availability and details varying by version and platform. Plex also documents scheduled-task behavior. These pages can help identify whether activity or maintenance occurred, but they do not establish that an unattended interval caused a particular failure. Plex status and dashboard and Plex scheduled tasks.
Quick Recap
Make unattended operation more resilient
- Keep the media-server database and application files on reliable local storage; plan network mounts so they are available before media scans and cleanup tasks.
- Review scheduled maintenance timing and logs, especially tasks that remove entries or clean up collections and playlists.
- Monitor application-aware health, not only whether the host responds to a basic uptime check. Account for startup migrations before applying restart rules.
- Use logs and metrics to distinguish service/database trouble from storage, transcoding, and network failures. If you enable metrics, keep the endpoint private unless you have deliberately secured external access.
- For libraries on Linux filesystems, verify watcher support and limits; where a storage type does not provide inotify directly, do not assume real-time monitoring will work as it does on a local supported filesystem.
- Check available transcode space against the media and expected simultaneous streams rather than assuming one fixed capacity will suit every server.
