Apple Watch Series 12’s Audio Intelligence is a set of four opt-in features—not a single conversation recorder. It can alert you to selected sounds, identify nearby music, show a text snippet of the previous 15 seconds when you ask, or create a high-level summary of conversations in places or periods you choose. Apple says raw audio is processed in an isolated hardware compartment and immediately deleted; that is Apple’s privacy claim, not an independently verified finding.
What the four Audio Intelligence features do
| Feature | Purpose and activation | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Sound Recognition | Detects selected sounds, such as sirens, alarms, and doorbells. | An alert on the watch. |
| Automatic Music Recognition | Uses Shazam-based music identification for music playing nearby. | Song title and artist in the Music Recognition widget in the Smart Stack. |
| Live Rewind | You activate it by double-pressing the Digital Crown. | A text snippet of the previous 15 seconds of conversation. |
| Siri Recap | When enabled, works in places or periods you select. | A title and key points summarizing conversations, saved in the Siri app. |
Apple describes Siri Recap as a brief, high-level summary, not a transcript. It says the feature is designed to exclude sensitive information such as financial details and government-assigned identifiers. That description does not establish that every sensitive detail will always be excluded.
How activation and notice differ
Sound Recognition and music identification
Sound Recognition detects the categories you select and can alert you without your iPhone nearby. Apple identifies deaf and hard-of-hearing people as a particularly relevant audience. To configure it, use the iPhone path Settings > Accessibility > Sound Recognition, including the option to detect using Apple Watch.

Automatic Music Recognition surfaces identified tracks in the Smart Stack’s Music Recognition widget. Apple lists it as part of Audio Intelligence, but does not describe it as a conversation-summary feature.

Live Rewind
Double-press the Digital Crown to request the previous 15 seconds as text. Apple says activation produces an audible chime even if the watch is silent, alongside an animation and microphone indicator. Those cues make Live Rewind’s active state apparent to people nearby.
Siri Recap
Siri Recap is enabled by the user and can be toggled in Control Center. The user chooses the places or periods in which it is active. Apple does not describe the same chime or visual activation cue for Siri Recap, so Live Rewind’s notice mechanism should not be assumed to apply to it.

What Apple says happens to audio and saved text
Apple says the features use the watch microphone and Apple silicon together with a mix of on-device and cloud-based AI models. Its Series 12 announcement names the S11 chip, the latest Apple Intelligence models on iPhone, and Private Cloud Compute. Apple does not say every feature uses the same processing path, and it would be inaccurate to describe all inference as local. It also says features that use server-side models, including Live Rewind and Siri Recap, are subject to daily usage limits.

Apple says the S11 chip includes Secure Exclave, a hardware-isolated compartment that processes audio apart from the rest of the system and immediately deletes it. Apple’s design claims are that Audio Intelligence does not create or store audio recordings; raw audio is inaccessible to the operating system, apps, the user, and Apple; and the system does not identify or attribute speakers.

For text outputs, Apple says saved Live Rewind snippets and Siri Recap summaries are end-to-end encrypted in the Siri app and can sync with iCloud. Apple says these saved items are inaccessible even to Apple. These are vendor statements about the design, not independent audit results.

What is available, and what remains uncertain?
Apple announced on September 9, 2026, that Live Rewind and Siri Recap would arrive in beta later in 2026. Apple’s September 30, 2026 support article describes setup and operation, but the official material available at that point did not establish that their beta rollout had begun. It also provides no independent accuracy, latency, or performance measurements. Treat availability as time-sensitive and check Apple’s current support information before relying on either conversation feature.
