An AI email connector links an AI application to an email service so it can use specific tools—such as searching messages, reading threads, drafting replies, or, if enabled, sending and managing mail. The connector’s actual reach depends on the tools it exposes and the permissions granted. MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is one standard for connecting AI applications to tools and data; it is not another name for every email integration.
What is an AI email connector?
Think of a connector as an authorized bridge between an AI app and an email account or service. You ask the AI to do something with mail, and the connector provides the tools that make the request possible. Those tools might be limited to searching and reading, or they might also create, send, label, or delete messages.
A connector is not necessarily a separate AI model, nor does the word alone tell you what it can do. Check the listed tools and the authorization prompt before connecting an inbox. Access can include actions, not just reading.

What does MCP mean?
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard created by Anthropic for AI applications to connect to tools and data. An MCP server makes tools available to a compatible AI application. A remote server is hosted online; a local MCP configuration is a separate arrangement.

MCP describes a way to connect applications and tools. It does not guarantee that a particular AI product supports a particular email service, or that a connector will have the same capabilities across products. In Claude, for example, Google’s documented Gmail route uses a remote MCP server.
What can Claude do with Gmail or Microsoft 365?
Gmail
Google’s official Claude Gmail connector listing says it can search inbox messages, read full threads, and draft replies. Its available tool inventory also includes actions such as sending messages, applying labels, and moving mail to trash. That means a user should not assume the integration is read-only: inspect the action list and authorization details when setting it up. See Google’s Claude for Gmail listing.

Microsoft 365
Claude’s Microsoft 365 connector is documented for organizations with a Microsoft Entra tenant tied to a Microsoft Business plan. The cited setup guide excludes personal Outlook.com and Hotmail accounts. It uses delegated permissions: Claude acts on each user’s behalf and can access only data that user is already permitted to view in Microsoft 365. The connector is read-only by default; write tools require additional administrator approval and organizational enablement. Read Anthropic’s Microsoft 365 setup guide.

Google documents a remote Gmail MCP endpoint and an OAuth 2.0 setup for Claude. Its guide lists Claude Enterprise, Pro, Max, or Team for this custom-connector route. The setup instructions and interface may change, so follow the current Google and Claude screens if their labels differ.

- Create an OAuth 2.0 client in Google Cloud. Follow Google’s Gmail MCP guide and configure the OAuth client for the connection.
- Configure Claude’s custom connector. Use the callback URI
https://claude.ai/api/mcp/auth_callbackin the OAuth setup and enter Google’s remote MCP endpoint:https://gmailmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1. - Authorize the account and review access. Complete Google’s authorization flow, then inspect the connector’s tools and the requested access before using it for mail actions.
Google specifies Streamable HTTP as the transport and OAuth 2.0 as authentication for other MCP clients as well. The exact route above is Google’s documented Claude configuration, not a universal setup for every email service or AI app. See Google’s Gmail MCP guide.
What does Microsoft 365 setup require?
- Administrator consent comes first. A Microsoft Entra Global Administrator grants tenant consent for the connector.
- Enable it for the organization where required. The setup guide says Team and Enterprise organizations also need to enable the connector in Claude’s organization settings.
- Users connect their own eligible accounts. Each member then connects under their own account, with delegated access to data they are allowed to view.
- Request separate approval for write tools. To enable writing, the organization must approve the updated permissions and enable the tools.

These options are not interchangeable. Compare the email provider and account type, supported AI product and plan, available read/write tools, administrator requirements, authentication and permissions, and whether the server is vendor-hosted or third-party.

Can ChatGPT connect to Gmail or Outlook?
OpenAI’s cited MCP documentation covers connecting MCP servers through the API. It does not establish whether consumer ChatGPT currently has the same built-in email connector experience documented for Claude, or provide a consumer setup path. Is it safe to connect an inbox to an AI?
Safety depends on the connector, server, permissions, and actions you enable. Email messages and attachments are untrusted content: they can contain instructions that try to manipulate an AI with access to sensitive data or tools. OpenAI identifies prompt injection as a security concern for MCP tools and recommends approval controls for sensitive actions.
- Grant the narrowest reasonable access. Review requested OAuth scopes and avoid enabling write actions unless they are needed.
- Check the server and its credentials. Anthropic advises connecting only to trusted remote servers. On Team or Enterprise, a shared credential can give every connector user the access associated with that credential, so it should be tightly limited.
- Know where a remote connector runs. Anthropic says Claude reaches remote custom connectors from its cloud infrastructure, not from the user’s local network. A private server may need network allowlisting or may otherwise be unreachable.
- Use approvals for consequential actions. Treat sending, deleting, or changing mail as sensitive operations, and keep confirmation controls where available.
- Disconnect unused access. Remove a connector when it is no longer needed.
