California’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) lets residents send one deletion request to covered data brokers. It is useful, but it is not a universal command to erase information from every company, stop future tracking, or protect private communications. A practical privacy strategy pairs deletion with steps that limit new collection and manage information held elsewhere.
What California’s DROP does—and where its reach ends
DROP is a California Privacy Protection Agency platform for residents to submit one deletion request to all active data brokers covered by the state system. Under the agency’s official terms, brokers must process requests at least once every 45 days beginning August 1, 2026. A broker that finds a match proceeds with deletion on that rolling cadence, subject to legal exemptions.
In July 2026, the California Privacy Protection Agency reported more than 325,000 consumer sign-ups and requests sent to more than 600 active brokers. Those are agency-reported counts, not an independent audit of how much information was deleted or how consistently individuals matched. The agency’s DROP page cautions: “Results will vary by consumer and may take time to notice.”

The boundary matters: DROP’s how-to guide says it does not cover information you gave directly to a business in a first-party interaction. The guide also uses “Opted-out” when a broker could not make an exact match; that status should not be read as proof that the broker found and erased a record. Matching, exemptions, and processing schedules affect what happens in an individual case.

That makes DROP one part of privacy work, not the whole job. Deleting existing broker records, reducing future collection, and managing accounts or communications are distinct goals. The approaches below address different parts of that picture; none should be treated as a guarantee of anonymity or total prevention.
1. Privacy-focused browsers and search engines
A browser or search engine with privacy features may reduce some forms of tracking while you browse or search. The actual protection depends on the product, its settings, and the sites and services you use. These tools act at the browsing layer; they do not send DROP requests or erase broker records already held.

2. Third-party data-removal services
A paid removal service may be relevant if you want help pursuing removal from sites outside DROP’s covered California broker process. That is a different scope from the free state platform. Coverage, accuracy, pricing, and results vary by provider, and the available evidence here does not establish a basis for ranking or endorsing one. Check what sites a service covers, what it actually submits, how it handles your personal information, and whether it reports outcomes before deciding.

VPNs and proxies route network traffic through another server and can change the IP address that a destination sees. They are not erasers for broker records, and IP masking alone does not make someone anonymous or prevent data brokers from identifying them. Treat network routing as a narrow tool for a network-level exposure, not a substitute for deletion or careful account use.

4. Email aliases and encrypted messaging
Email aliases and encrypted messaging address different risks. An alias can compartmentalize an email address—for example, using a distinct address for a particular signup—so it is easier to separate or replace that channel. Encrypted messaging concerns the contents of communications, not whether a company has other identifying account information. Choose tools based on the exposure you want to reduce, and do not assume either approach removes records already collected by another organization.
5. Ad blockers and anti-tracking extensions
These browser add-ons may block some unwanted requests or tracking mechanisms. Their effects depend on the extension, configuration, browser, and site; they can also affect site features or compatibility. Review permissions and settings, and treat blocking as a reduction in some browser-level collection—not comprehensive prevention.

6. Self-hosted and open-source software
Self-hosting and open-source software can give technically capable users more control over where services run and how they are configured. That control comes with responsibility: setup, updates, backups, and security maintenance matter. Using open-source or self-hosted software does not automatically make a system private or secure, and it does not undo data already stored elsewhere.

These are recurring practices rather than products. Review accounts, app permissions, connected services, and the information requested when you sign up. Remove accounts you no longer need, revoke unnecessary access, and provide only the details a service genuinely requires. Minimizing what you disclose going forward can limit future exposure, but it does not erase information other organizations already hold; deletion requests address that separate task.

8. Decentralized identity
Decentralized identity is a developing idea for managing identity information and credentials across systems. It is not established here as a broadly adopted consumer solution, and the available evidence does not demonstrate practical readiness or independent effectiveness. Treat it as an area to evaluate carefully, not a current replacement for account controls or deletion requests.
9. Legislative advocacy
Advocacy works at the collective level: supporting policy changes can help shape the rules that govern data collection, access, and deletion. It is not a personal privacy product and will not immediately remove an individual record. It complements individual steps by addressing the wider framework those steps operate within.
How to choose which privacy steps to take
Start with the problem rather than the tool. If you are a California resident seeking deletion from covered brokers, use DROP. If the concern is future browser tracking, look at browser settings and carefully chosen blocking tools. If it is account exposure, review permissions and minimize disclosures. If it is the contents of conversations, evaluate messaging protections. A third-party removal service may be worth considering for a broader set of sites, but verify its scope and terms rather than assuming it covers everything.
