Ben Simmons’s clearest path to fitting alongside Sacramento’s guards is to make himself useful off the ball: draw defenders away from the paint, cut and screen decisively, finish transition chances, and move the ball quickly when defenses react. His size could also help protect smaller guards on defense. Those are tactical priorities, not proof that the fit has already worked in Kings games.
Why the fit depends on more than Simmons’s passing
Sacramento’s 2026–27 roster lists Simmons as a 6-foot-10, 240-pound guard-forward alongside guards including Malik Monk, Zach LaVine, Elfrid Payton, and Darius Acuff Jr. The roster also includes frontcourt players such as Domantas Sabonis, Keegan Murray, and De’Andre Hunter. With several guards available to create, Simmons’s fit depends in part on whether he can contribute without occupying the same on-ball space they need.
His latest season line in the reviewed NBA.com player-page material is from 2024–25: 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game in 22.0 minutes, across 51 regular-season appearances and 24 starts. That suggests a possible connective-passer role, but it does not predict his production or effectiveness in Sacramento. The Kings say he missed the 2025–26 season, and the reviewed sources do not establish current shooting numbers, health measurements, or a settled 2026–27 rotation.

1. Become a credible threat away from the ball
The biggest strategic need is to make defenders think twice about leaving him open. A repeatable scoring threat outside the paint could make it harder for opponents to station a helper in the lane and deter drives by LaVine, Monk, Acuff, or another guard. The reviewed material does not provide a current three-point percentage, shot chart, or practice data, so it cannot establish a particular shooting weakness or quantify how much he needs to improve.

2. Turn defensive attention into cuts, screens, and finishes
If a defender helps off Simmons, he can punish that choice by cutting behind ball-watchers, screening for a guard, sealing a smaller defender near the basket, or running the floor in transition. Those actions only help if his timing is decisive and he converts the resulting chances. They are recommended role behaviors, not reported results from Kings games.
3. Make quick reads without displacing Sacramento’s guards
Simmons’s 5.6 assists per game in 2024–25 show that passing was a significant part of his recent statistical profile. Beside multiple guards, a useful role could include initiating in transition, facilitating as a secondary handler, or passing after a short roll. He would need to make quick decisions and avoid holding the ball in the same areas where Sacramento’s guards need to create. That role allocation is a tactical inference from the roster and his assist numbers, not a confirmed coaching plan.

4. Use his size on defense while staying within what is known
At his listed 6-foot-10 height, Simmons has the size to take on larger perimeter players, switch selectively, rebound from the perimeter, and help near the rim. That could give the Kings options to cover for smaller guards. The available material does not include current defensive tracking or matchup figures, however, so his potential assignment range should not be confused with demonstrated defensive impact.
5. Establish availability and role continuity
After missing the 2025–26 season, availability and sustained participation will matter to any projection of his fit. The sources reviewed do not establish a medical cause, recovery timeline, or readiness level. Sacramento’s team page also quotes head coach Doug Christie praising Simmons during camp, but a positive camp comment is not evidence of game readiness or a defined rotation role. Christie is quoted on the Kings page on October 1, 2026: “Nothing I read was true,” he said. “I really enjoy being around the kid. He speaks. He enjoys basketball. He loves coaching, and he’s special.”

Can Simmons play with Monk and LaVine?
It is a plausible tactical fit if Simmons complements their creation rather than competing with them for the ball. His passing could help connect possessions, while cuts, screens, and transition runs could create opportunities when defenders focus on the guards. The main concern is spacing: if his defender can leave him to clog driving lanes, Sacramento’s guards may have less room to attack. Whether that trade-off works depends on Simmons’s off-ball scoring threat, decision speed, and the lineups the Kings actually use.

- Do opponents guard Simmons beyond the paint, or use his defender to help against drives?
- Do Sacramento’s guards retain clear lanes to attack when he shares the floor with them?
- Do his cuts and screens create advantages, and does he finish the chances they produce?
- When he handles the ball, does he make quick reads without adding avoidable turnovers or slowing the guards’ offense?
- Which larger perimeter players does he defend, and how do the team’s defensive possessions look with him on the floor?
- Does he remain available and maintain a consistent role over time?
The reviewed sources provide no current lineup sample or validated numbers for these comparisons, so early judgments should rest on observed game evidence rather than assumptions.
