On a college football injury report, “Available” generally means the player is eligible and expected to be able to participate under the policy behind that report. It does not guarantee the player will enter the game, start, or play a particular number of snaps. The exact definition depends on the conference, season, and whether the report is a midweek or game-day update.
What “Available” means on game day
Under the SEC’s 2025–26 football regulations, game-day “Available” means the player “will dress for the game and be available to play.” The Big 12 also uses “Available” as a game-day category, but consult its policy for the exact terms that apply to a given report. Neither label promises that the player will take the field.
Availability is a participation designation, not a medical diagnosis. It does not tell you why a player’s status changed, whether the player will start, or how much playing time the player will receive. A player could be dressed and eligible to play without being used by the coaches.

Midweek categories
SEC and Big 12 weekly reports use the categories Available, Probable, Questionable, Doubtful, and Out. The Big 12 defines these as chance-to-play values: Available, 100%; Probable, 75%; Questionable, 50%; Doubtful, 25%; and Out, 0%. These figures are policy definitions, not measured probabilities or published rates of what players actually do.

Game-day categories
SEC and Big 12 policies use Available, Game Time Decision, and Out on game day. In the SEC, Game Time Decision means coaches and/or medical personnel will evaluate the player during pregame warmups before deciding whether the player can participate. Game-day Out means the player will not dress or be available; game-day Available means the player will dress and be available.
Why a status can change before kickoff
Reports have separate midweek and game-day categories, and teams provide updates as the game approaches. For SEC Saturday games, the 2025–26 regulations call for reports on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, followed by a game-day update at least 90 minutes before kickoff. The Big Ten’s 2026 process calls for reports three, two, and one days before a conference game, plus a game-day report two hours before kickoff.

Those schedules are not interchangeable. A midweek listing is not necessarily the final game-day designation, so check the latest report and its update time when interpreting a player’s status.
Does an unlisted player count as available?
It depends on the policy. Under SEC rules, a player who is not listed is considered Available unless an exemption applies. The SEC exempts players who are not expected to participate and those who only infrequently play a minimal portion of games. The Big Ten’s 2026 announcement likewise says unlisted players are considered available. Do not assume another conference or an unofficial team or media update follows the same rule.

Who and which games are covered?
“Injury report” can refer to an official conference availability report or an unofficial team or media update. Reporting requirements vary. For example, the Big Ten’s 2026 process applies to games between conference opponents. It requires reports on visiting players on the travel squad, as well as players outside the travel squad who are on the two-deep or otherwise participate regularly.
Also, an “Out” label does not necessarily mean an injury. Under SEC policy, Out may reflect injury or illness, but it can also involve suspension, eligibility or legal matters, or personal or family matters. The status alone does not establish the reason.

How to read a report accurately
- Identify the authority and season. Check whether the report follows SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, ACC, CFP, or another policy; do not treat one conference’s definition as a national rule.
- Check when it was issued. Distinguish a midweek listing from a game-day update, and note the published deadline or timestamp.
- Read the status as a participation designation. “Available” indicates availability under that policy, not a guarantee of playing time or a diagnosis.
- Check who must be listed. Scope, reporting requirements, and exemptions affect what an absent name means.
