On exhausts that use spring-retained slip joints, the springs pull pipe sections together and keep them seated. They retain the connection between parts such as a header, link pipe, and muffler; they are functional fasteners, not decoration. Not every motorcycle exhaust uses this design, so follow the instructions for your specific system.
How exhaust springs retain pipe joints
A spring-retained slip joint has one pipe section that fits into a sleeve or over another section. The spring hooks across the joint and pulls the connected parts together, helping keep the pipe seated as the exhaust system is assembled.
For example, Akrapovič’s installation instructions place springs at header, link-pipe, and muffler connections. For that system, the instructions say to “make sure that springs pull the header tubes all the way into the sleeves.” This describes the specified exhaust, not a universal layout or procedure for every motorcycle.

Spring locations and arrangements vary by system. Some exhausts use springs to retain slip joints; the presence of springs, their number, and their placement should be determined from the exhaust maker’s instructions. Do not assume that a spring belongs at a particular joint just because another motorcycle’s system has one there.

When fitting an exhaust, check that each spring-retained pipe is fully seated as directed by the manufacturer. Scorpion’s motorcycle exhaust fitting guide also advises checking system alignment, confirming clearance from moving parts, and checking for leaks after installation. Fit spring clamps where the guide or system instructions require them.
Removing or fitting exhaust springs safely
A hooked spring tool gives you a purpose-made way to pull a spring into or off its retaining point. Yamaha describes its Spring Hook Puller as useful for removing exhaust-system springs. That listing does not establish that the tool fits every motorcycle or exhaust, so check suitability for the spring you are handling.

- Follow the installation or service instructions for your exact exhaust system.
- Use a suitable spring hook and keep the spring securely engaged with the tool. Yoshimura’s GSX-S1000/KATANA instructions warn that the spring must be firmly hooked to the installation tool or it may cause injury; this is a product-specific warning.
- Let the exhaust cool before working on it or checking for leaks after a ride.
If a spring is missing, stretched, or damaged, use the exhaust maker’s parts listing or a model-specific fitment lookup to find the correct replacement. The available manufacturer information does not establish one universal spring size or compatibility rule.
