The PGA TOUR and DP World Tour primarily stage individual golf tournaments, though rules such as field size and cuts depend on the event. LIV Golf combines individual and team contests, and in 2026 its regular events are 72 holes—not the 54-hole format associated with its earlier seasons. The clearest differences are how players start, whether the field is cut, how team scores count and how each tour crowns season champions.
What are the three tours?
PGA TOUR
The PGA TOUR is a professional golf tour whose tournaments generally center on individual stroke play. Its season-long FedExCup points race culminates in a three-event playoff. The PGA TOUR’s 2026 Media Guide lists 34 regular-season events before the playoffs, and also describes the FedExCup Fall, which finalizes eligibility and playing opportunities.
DP World Tour
The DP World Tour is a professional golf tour with event formats that can vary. For example, one DP World Tour pro-am championship format pairs professional stroke play with a concurrent team competition. That event’s rules should not be treated as universal tour rules.
LIV Golf
LIV Golf stages individual and team competitions at the same events. Its 2026 format explainer describes a 14-event season with 57 players, including five Wild Cards, arranged around 13 four-player teams and the Wild Card places. Regular tournaments use four rounds over 72 holes, shotgun starts and no cut.

What happens at a regular LIV Golf event?
Each player’s score counts toward the individual contest, while the four players on each team also contribute to the team competition in every round. The lowest 72-hole individual score wins the event; team scores are tracked alongside individual scores. Because there is no cut, all 57 players play all four rounds. The shotgun start means groups begin on different holes at the same time rather than all starting from the first tee in sequence.
How do the season championships differ?
PGA TOUR: FedExCup points and playoffs
The PGA TOUR’s 2026 guide lists 34 FedExCup regular-season events followed by three playoff events. Playoff fields narrow from 70 players to 50 and then 30. The TOUR Championship is a 72-hole stroke-play event in which all players start at even par; the guide says there are no cuts within playoff events.

LIV Golf: individual standings and a team title
LIV’s 2026 format separates the individual season standings from the team championship. Individual standings over the first 13 events determine the individual champion, while a separate season-ending Team Championship decides the team title.

Why “72 holes versus 54” is no longer the right shorthand
LIV Golf’s earlier regular-event format was 54 holes, but the league announced that it would move to 72 holes beginning in 2026. Its official 2026 format page describes four-round events, while retaining no cuts and shotgun starts. So a 72-hole total alone does not tell you whether players face a cut, how they start, or whether team scoring is included.
