Agentic Engineering Skills is a free, open-source collection of instructions for coding assistants that help developers build Google Agent Development Kit (ADK) applications on Google Cloud. Install the skills in an existing project and ask a compatible coding agent to apply one; they guide development work but are not automatically loaded by the ADK agents in your running application.
What the Agentic Engineering Skills collection does
The project, published by Ruslan Khissamiyev, packages engineering guidance into folders containing instructions, reference material and, where useful, helper scripts. Its goal is to help a coding assistant work on an existing ADK application—not to add a new runtime feature to that application. The repository describes the collection as accompanying Khissamiyev’s book, Agentic Engineering: Building Production-Grade Multi-Agent Systems with Google ADK on GCP, but says the book and its example repository are not required to use the skills. The project README is the source for its current catalog and installation details; the author introduced it in a Reddit post.
The collection documents 13 skills: the general-purpose adk-engineer, the planning-oriented adk-system-designer, and 11 topic specialists. The general entry point is intended for developers who know what they want to achieve but are unsure which specialist to use: it inspects the project and selects one or more relevant skills. Use the system designer when you need to map system-wide requirements and trade-offs before implementation.

| Skill area | What it is intended to help with |
|---|---|
| Workflow design | Structuring agent workflows and decisions. |
| Reliable API tool calls | Handling tool calls reliably, including failure cases such as a timeout that could otherwise lead to a duplicate refund. |
| Operational guardrails | Designing operational protections, including enforcing ownership of conversations. |
| Google Cloud deployment | Preparing and comparing deployment approaches, runtime identity, configuration, health checks and verification. |
| Optimization | Reviewing application efficiency and resource use. |
| Frontend integration | Connecting an ADK application to a frontend, including streaming interactions. |
| Memory architecture | Designing what an application remembers and how that memory is used. |
| Agent evaluation | Testing behavior as well as generated text. |
| Sensitive-data protection | Considering sensitive data across prompts, tools and responses. |
| Tool authentication and secrets | Handling credentials and authentication for tools. |
| Controlled SQL analytics | Supporting analytics queries with controls around SQL access. |
These examples describe the project’s intended engineering concerns, not proof that following a skill makes an implementation secure or production-ready. A skill can guide a coding assistant; the developer still needs to inspect the proposed design, code and checks.

How to install and invoke the skills
The repository’s documented installation uses the Skills CLI from your project directory. Its current prerequisites are Git, npm, Node.js 22.20 or later, and a coding agent that supports skills. The repository lists Claude Code, Codex, Antigravity and Gemini CLI as client choices; compatibility and account access depend on the client and can change. Check the README for current options before installing.
- Open a terminal in your ADK project. The command should run from the project directory where you want the coding assistant to use the skills.
- Install the complete collection:
npx skills@latest add RuslanKhis/agentic-engineering-skills --skill '*' - Open or restart the coding-agent session if needed. Skill discovery behavior varies by client, so follow the client’s instructions if the skills do not appear.
- Ask for a specific outcome. Invoke
adk-engineerif you are unsure which specialist fits, or name a relevant specialist directly. State the change you want and provide the project context the assistant needs. - Review the work. Check the proposed plan, edits and verification steps; run the project’s own tests and inspect any security-sensitive behavior before accepting the result.
The README says the installer downloads skill files. It does not install ADK into your application or require Google Cloud credentials just to install the collection. The repository also documents a 2-minute-20-second walkthrough involving a streaming frontend and a remembered language preference, with local runnable code and checks. That is project documentation, not an independent evaluation of the skills.

How these differ from Google’s official ADK coding resources
Google’s Code with AI guide describes two ways to use coding assistants with ADK: install development skills through Agents CLI, or connect a coding tool to ADK documentation through an MCP server. The guide’s Agents CLI setup command is uvx google-agents-cli setup. Its listed skill topics include development lifecycle and coding guidance, scaffolding, evaluation, deployment to Agent Runtime, Cloud Run or GKE, Gemini Enterprise publishing, tracing and logging integrations, and a Python API reference.

The Agentic Engineering Skills author acknowledges overlap with Google’s Agents CLI skills, particularly around scaffolding, recipes, evaluation, deployment and observability. The author characterizes the independent collection as more focused on application decisions and failure cases, and as not requiring the Agents CLI lifecycle. That is the project author’s distinction, not the result of an independently benchmarked comparison. They are complementary options to assess against your workflow, rather than interchangeable proof of a particular outcome.

Do ADK applications use these skills at runtime?
No. The repository’s coding-agent skills provide development-time instructions to a coding assistant. They do not become instructions for the ADK agents in your application just because you install them in the project.
ADK separately has a built-in Skills feature for runtime agents. Google describes an ADK skill as “a self-contained unit of functionality that an ADK agent can use to perform a specific task.” The feature is labeled experimental in the ADK Skills documentation, which lists support at ADK Python v1.25.0, TypeScript v0.6.1, Go v1.2.0 and Kotlin v0.1.0. Those are the documented version floors, not a guarantee about later compatibility.

In the ADK feature, skills can be defined in code or loaded from a filesystem and made available to an agent through SkillToolset. Google describes three levels: discovery metadata in frontmatter, instructions loaded when a skill is triggered, and resources such as references, assets or scripts. Its Google Developers tutorial covers inline checklists, file-based skills, external skill imports and a “skill factory” pattern in which an agent creates skill definitions. It recommends keeping small skills inline and using files when references or reuse are useful; review generated skill files before deployment because they affect agent behavior.

What the deployment specialist can—and cannot—decide
ADK is an open-source framework available in Python, TypeScript, Go and Java. Google documents local execution and deployment options including Agent Runtime, Cloud Run and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE). The collection’s deployment specialist is intended to help compare those options and prepare identity, configuration, health checks and verification. Neither the existence of the specialist nor the options establishes one universally best host or a current price winner.
For a real deployment decision, compare the options against your own constraints:
- Operations and control: how much infrastructure control you need and how much your team can operate.
- Existing platform: whether your organization already standardizes on a platform that changes the cost of adopting another.
- Identity and configuration: how the service will receive its runtime identity and configuration.
- Startup and health checks: whether the application’s startup behavior and readiness checks fit the hosting environment.
- Scaling and concurrency: the workload’s expected scaling behavior and concurrency requirements.
- Release verification: how you will validate deployment and confirm the application is healthy.
Use the skill to structure that analysis, then verify the selected platform’s current documentation and test the deployment for your workload. The available project and Google documentation do not supply a universal recommendation or a comparable price analysis.
When these skills are a useful fit
They are most relevant if you already have, or plan to build, an ADK application and want a coding assistant to help with engineering concerns that go beyond generating a basic agent. Start with the entry skill when the work spans several areas or the right specialist is unclear; start with the system designer when the main need is architectural planning. For a narrow task—such as reviewing tool authentication or evaluation—use the matching specialist if it fits your coding agent and project.
The repository is mutable, so its supported clients, prerequisites and skill catalog may change. Treat it as an open-source aid, not a guarantee of safe or correct production code: review changes, run appropriate tests and make your own deployment and security decisions.
