A computer monitor displays the computer’s output so you can see and use it. It presents text, images, video, and interface elements; its display capabilities affect how clearly, smoothly, and comfortably that information appears.
What is a computer monitor’s main function?
A monitor is a visual output device. The computer processes data and generates output; the monitor presents that output on screen for a person to view. It does not create the underlying data. This includes a graphical interface, documents, photos, video, and other visual content.
In that sense, the monitor serves as the computer’s viewing surface. The same basic role applies whether you use a computer for office work, creative tasks, watching video, or gaming.

How do monitor features affect what you see?
Resolution and visible detail
Resolution describes the number of pixels used to form the image. A higher resolution can show more detail and provide more screen workspace, though the apparent size of text and interface elements also depends on display size and scaling. HP lists 1920 × 1080, 2560 × 1440, and 3840 × 2160 as common examples—not requirements for every user. For comfortable reading, usable text size matters as well as pixel count.

Refresh rate and motion
Refresh rate is how many times per second the displayed image updates. Microsoft explains that a 60 Hz display updates 60 times per second. A higher refresh rate can make motion and scrolling appear smoother when the monitor, computer hardware, and settings support it. Color, contrast, and supported formats
Some displays and computer systems support features such as high dynamic range (HDR) and wide color gamut, which can affect the range of brightness and color shown. These capabilities depend on the display and the rest of the hardware; support should not be assumed from a feature name alone. Microsoft describes the hardware requirements for HDR in Windows.

Which monitor qualities matter for different tasks?
The monitor always presents visual output, but the most useful display qualities depend on what you do. HP’s guide recommends considering resolution and refresh rate for gaming, while clarity and ergonomics are priorities for a home-office display. Creative work may place more weight on color capability and detail. Screen size, desk space, connectivity, and stand adjustability can also affect whether a display suits a particular setup.
There is no single specification that makes a monitor right for everyone. Choose features around the task and the computer’s supported capabilities rather than treating the highest number in one category as universally best.

How does monitor placement affect viewing?
Placement helps make the monitor’s output easier to see and can support a more comfortable workstation. OSHA recommends putting the monitor directly in front of you, with its top at or slightly below eye level. Its guidance gives a generally preferred viewing distance of 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 cm), while noting that workstation setup should be adjusted to the individual. Reflections can make screen content harder to see. OSHA recommends adjusting screen position and lighting to reduce glare; a glare filter is another possible measure when those adjustments do not resolve reflections. Its lighting guidance covers ways to manage workstation lighting.

Long viewing periods may contribute to eye fatigue and dryness. OSHA suggests periodically looking at distant objects, blinking, and alternating tasks. These are practical viewing habits, not a guarantee against discomfort or eye problems.
