Self-driving technology could prevent some crashes and expand mobility for people who cannot drive, but those benefits are not yet a guarantee of consumer cars that drive themselves. The clearest quantified evidence today concerns specific driver-assistance features: a January 2025 NHTSA analysis found fewer front-to-rear crashes associated with automatic emergency braking. In the United States, consumer vehicles still require an attentive driver, and fully automated cars are not available for purchase.
What counts as self-driving technology?
Driver-assistance systems and automated driving systems are not the same. Features such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assistance can warn a driver or intervene in defined situations. They do not make the vehicle self-driving: the person behind the wheel remains responsible for driving and must stay engaged.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that even the highest level of driving automation available to consumers requires drivers’ full engagement and undivided attention. NHTSA describes vehicles with an automated driving system—the technology some people call “self-driving”—as a future technology that consumers cannot currently purchase and use as private vehicles in the United States. NHTSA’s automated-vehicle safety guidance explains the distinction and current limitations.
How could self-driving technology improve safety?
It may prevent or lessen some crashes
Driver-assistance technology can alert a driver to hazards or intervene in particular situations. More capable automation could take on a greater share of the driving task and, in principle, reduce exposure to human mistakes that contribute to crashes. NHTSA identifies crash reduction, fewer injuries, and lives saved as potential benefits—not assured outcomes. The technology can still have limitations, and its performance depends on the system and the conditions in which it operates.

- Spinning Light-Up Toy Car: The transparent body reveals colorful moving gears while LED effects, music, and self-propelled motion create engaging visual and auditory play.
- Bump-and-Go Movement: When the car meets a barrier, it automatically changes direction and keeps moving, giving children an easy-to-follow cause-and-effect play experience.
- Three Play Modes: Use the on/off switch to choose off, lights and movement, or lights, movement, and sound. Spinning gears invite children to observe motion and explore basic mechanics.
- Gift for Ages 3+: A playful light-up car for 3-year-old boys and girls, suitable for birthdays, holidays, game prizes, or gift shops.
- Shared or Solo Play: Children can watch the colorful gears turn and the car move, join parents or siblings on the floor, or enjoy independent play that supports interaction and observation.
The strongest quantified evidence here is for particular assistance features, not fully automated cars. In January 2025, NHTSA’s Partnership for Analytics Research in Traffic Safety (PARTS) reported that automatic emergency braking was associated with a 49% reduction in front-to-rear crashes across model years 2015–2023. The analysis drew on approximately 98 million vehicles, 168 models, and more than 21.1 million police-reported crashes supplied by NHTSA; MITRE linked and analyzed the data. The result applies to the studied AEB-equipped vehicles and crash type—it does not show that self-driving cars reduce crashes by 49%. See the NHTSA PARTS findings and study details.
Some systems may help protect pedestrians and cyclists
Active safety systems can also help protect people outside a vehicle. In the same January 2025 PARTS report, vehicles equipped with pedestrian AEB had a reported 9% reduction in single-vehicle frontal crashes involving non-motorists. This is a specific finding about that feature and crash category; it should not be read as a reduction in all pedestrian crashes or as evidence about every automated vehicle.

- TRANSPARENT TOY CAR WITH MOVING GEARS: The clear shell reveals colorful spinning gears in action as the car moves. Instead of hiding the action, this moving gear car puts every turn on display, gears toys for kids who love to see how things work, with fascinating motion.
- CAUSE AND EFFECT TOY FOR LEARNING THROUGH PLAY: As the wheels move and each gear turns the next, kids see how one action produces another, cause and effect toys learning. This educational sensory toy builds observation, visual tracking and mechanical thinking through cause and effect play.
- FLASHING LED LIGHTS, MUSIC AND MOTION: Bright LED flashing lights glow through the transparent body as the car moves around the room, a glow and go light up sensory toy. Spinning gears and cheerful music create a musical sensory toy for kids who love colorful motion.
Crash-report counts need context
Early crash reports submitted under NHTSA’s Standing General Order were not normalized by the number of vehicles deployed or miles driven. NHTSA also said the initial reports were not comprehensive and relied on inputs such as telematics, complaints, and field reports. As a result, raw manufacturer crash counts from that release cannot be used as comparable safety rates. NHTSA’s Standing General Order crash-reporting information provides the agency’s context for those data.
Who could benefit from greater mobility?
Partial or full automation could give some older adults and people with disabilities additional ways to travel. It may also improve access to work, education, training, services, and other opportunities for people who cannot drive themselves. These are prospective benefits, not a promise that a given person will be able to use a particular system: access depends on the person, vehicle or service, operating area, and deployment conditions. NHTSA discusses these possibilities in its automated-vehicle safety guidance.

What is actually available in the United States in 2026?
Consumer vehicles may offer assistance with specific driving functions, but drivers must remain attentive and responsible. NHTSA says fully automated vehicles are not available for consumer purchase in the United States. Automated vehicles are being tested or used in limited places and conditions, which is different from having a car that a private buyer can use as a self-driving vehicle anywhere.
A July 30, 2026 NHTSA announcement described a temporary exemption allowing Zoox to deploy up to 2,500 robotaxis annually for two years, under an oversight structure. The announcement also discussed work on performance standards and updated deployment guidance. This is a limited regulatory and commercial deployment action, not permission for consumers to buy a self-driving car or evidence that robotaxis are available everywhere. How should you assess a car advertised with driving assistance?
- Check the exact feature. Look up what the particular vehicle’s AEB, adaptive cruise control, lane centering, or other assistance system is designed to do. Do not treat a feature name or marketing description as proof that the vehicle drives itself.
- Understand the driver’s role. Confirm when the system can operate and what the driver must do. For current consumer systems, NHTSA says the driver must remain engaged and attentive.
- Compare vehicle safety information. NHTSA directs shoppers to its 5-Star Safety Ratings as one way to compare vehicles. Consider the ratings alongside the specific features and their stated limitations.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
NHTSA estimated that 39,254 people were killed in U.S. motor vehicle crashes in 2024. That figure provides safety context; it is not a measure of automated-vehicle effectiveness. The PARTS findings offer evidence that specific ADAS features were associated with reductions in certain crash types. They do not establish equivalent benefits for fully automated vehicles, every vehicle model, or every road user. NHTSA’s stated benefits for higher automation remain potential outcomes rather than a guarantee.
