A second monitor can keep reference material, messages, or other secondary information visible while you focus on your main task. For the literal question, “What are the benefits of having a second monitor?” the short answer is easier access to related information and, for some tasks, more efficient work—not a guaranteed productivity boost. How useful it is depends on your work, screen arrangement, desk space, and computer’s display connections.
How a second monitor can help
Keep secondary information in view
A second screen is often most useful as a place for information related to your main task: a reference document beside a draft, communications beside a work application, or background activity that you want to monitor. In a 1999 Microsoft Research field study, Jonathan Grudin observed that multiple monitors were often used this way for peripheral awareness and quick access to related resources. Microsoft Research’s study record describes the field study.
Reduce window switching
When two windows need to be consulted together, placing them on separate displays can reduce the need to repeatedly switch or rearrange windows. A systematic review of 18 studies found strong evidence that users prefer dual-monitor arrangements, alongside moderate evidence from controlled laboratory studies that multiple monitors may improve task efficiency and reduce desktop interaction. The review does not establish that every user or task will benefit. The review’s PubMed record summarizes its findings.

Make some complex, multi-application work easier to manage
Research on a prototype large display found benefits, preference, and satisfaction during complex office work involving multiple applications. That result supports the possibility that more visible workspace can help when a task involves several information sources; it is not proof that any additional monitor improves every kind of work. Microsoft Research’s publication record describes the study.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
What the productivity evidence does—and does not—show
Preference and productivity are different outcomes: people may favor a two-screen setup even when a study does not find a measurable efficiency improvement. The systematic review found stronger evidence for user preference than for objective efficiency gains, and its laboratory findings support a possible benefit in some circumstances, not a universal increase.
A separate 2021 laboratory study compared three computing environments with 18 engineering students working on an information-rich engineering problem. It found no statistically significant overall difference in efficiency or workload among the environments. One dual-monitor desktop-plus-tablet configuration did produce fewer errors than the single-monitor-plus-two-tablets setup and higher usability ratings than the other two configurations. Those comparisons apply to the tested task and setups; they are not a general recommendation to add a tablet. The study is available through PubMed Central.

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
These findings do not justify a fixed percentage claim for how much more productive a second monitor will make you. The practical question is whether your regular tasks involve information you need to see at the same time.

When one screen or a larger display may fit better
| Option | May suit you when… | Tradeoff to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Second monitor | You regularly work between a primary task and references, communications, or background information. | It takes desk space and may require more head turning, depending on placement. |
| One screen | You usually concentrate on one window or application at a time. | Related material may require window switching or rearranging. |
| Larger display | You want more room on one screen for complex, multi-application work. | Evidence from a prototype large display does not establish the benefit of every larger consumer display or setup. |
Before adding a display, check whether your computer supports an additional monitor and has a compatible video output, whether an adapter or dock is needed, and whether your desk can accommodate the arrangement. Compatibility varies by computer; the studies cited here do not establish what a particular device supports.

Consider screen position and posture
Extra workspace can come with a physical tradeoff if you repeatedly turn your head to see the secondary screen. In a 2013 study, ten healthy participants completed reading, typing, and search tasks; dual monitors increased head-neck rotation by 9.0 degrees compared with one monitor in that experiment. The small sample and short tasks do not predict long-term effects for every user. The study’s authors noted that prolonged use of more rotated, asymmetrical postures may increase musculoskeletal risk. The CDC Stacks record provides the study details.
Arrange the displays around the work that holds most of your attention. Keep the primary work area where it does not demand repeated large turns, and place secondary information where it remains easy to consult. An adjustable monitor arm can help with positioning, but the cited studies do not show that an arm, a particular layout, or a particular monitor size prevents discomfort. The systematic review also calls for better biomechanical and long-term field research on posture, health, and productivity.
