South Korea has multiple alternatives to buying liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Alaska: it already sources LNG from suppliers across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Russia, Australia, and the United States, and can contract with producers or traders serving several regions. It can also reduce the role of gas in electricity by expanding nuclear and renewable power, supported by storage and grid capacity. Those measures change energy demand; they do not replace a cargo one-for-one.
Where can South Korea buy LNG instead?
Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) says it imports LNG mainly from Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia’s Sakhalin region, Australia, and the United States. That makes Alaska one possible source within a much broader global market—not the only route available to Korean buyers. KOGAS’s overview describes established supplier regions, but does not provide a current supplier-by-supplier import-share breakdown. KOGAS company overview
- Australia: A supplier named by KOGAS; the company also lists interests in the GLNG project and Prelude floating LNG project.
- Qatar: An established supplier and KOGAS project partner, with a long-term supply contract announced by the Korean government.
- Oman: Named as a Middle Eastern source; KOGAS lists an interest in Oman LNG.
- Indonesia and Malaysia: Named as Southeast Asian sources. KOGAS also lists an interest in Indonesia’s DSLNG project.
- Russia (Sakhalin), Yemen, and Egypt: Named by KOGAS as sources. Their mention does not establish that additional cargoes are currently available or could be increased without constraints.
- United States outside Alaska: KOGAS identifies the United States as a source and says it has used vessels carrying U.S. LNG. This establishes U.S. LNG as an existing source category, not the availability of a particular Gulf Coast cargo for a new deal.
What do KOGAS’s overseas project interests mean?
KOGAS reported 18 resource-development projects in 10 countries at the end of 2025. Its portfolio includes projects in Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Indonesia, Australia, Canada, and Mozambique. These interests can establish commercial relationships and exposure to LNG projects, but an equity stake is not automatically a cargo entitlement. It does not, by itself, guarantee a volume, delivery schedule, or the ability to redirect LNG to Korea. KOGAS resource development

What do Korea’s contracts show?
Public contract announcements demonstrate that Korean buyers can secure LNG through suppliers and portfolio companies outside Alaska. They do not show how much Alaska LNG Korea might buy, if any, or which contract could replace a specific volume.
| Supplier or source | Announced terms | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| QatarEnergy | 2 million tons per year from 2025 through 2044 | The Republic of Korea’s 2021 announcement described a 20-year KOGAS supply contract. It is evidence of a long-term Qatar route, not a measure of spare supply or an Alaska replacement volume. Republic of Korea Policy Briefing |
| TotalEnergies | 1 million tons per year for 10 years, starting at the end of 2027 | TotalEnergies said in a 2025 announcement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that KOGAS selected it in an international tender. The announcement documents another contracting route, not a specific Alaska substitution. SEC filing |
These figures describe separate contracts with different start dates and terms. They should not be added together and treated as currently available replacement supply.

How large is U.S. LNG supply—and what does that tell Korea?
The United States exported 11.9 billion cubic feet of LNG per day in 2024, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Australia and Qatar were the next two largest LNG exporters in the EIA’s account. That indicates the scale of the global supplier base, but it does not show how much U.S. LNG is available to Korea, what a Korean buyer would pay, or whether any U.S. cargo would come from Alaska. Could South Korea use less gas instead?
Yes, but this is a different kind of alternative. Nuclear and renewable electricity can reduce the role of gas in power generation; storage and grid capacity can help integrate generation and manage supply. They do not supply LNG, and the cited policy plan does not quantify how much gas demand these measures will displace.
South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy described a prospective electricity mix under its 11th Electricity Supply Basic Plan that includes new nuclear plants, renewables, hydrogen, and other zero-carbon sources, alongside grid and storage measures. The announcement presents a planning direction, not evidence that each measure is already operating or has displaced LNG. Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy

Can the alternatives be ranked by price or availability?
Not from the available evidence. The cited sources do not provide a consistent, current comparison of landed prices, supplier-by-supplier import shares, cargo flexibility, or spare capacity. Contracted volumes, national export totals, project interests, and policy plans measure different things; none alone proves that a source can replace a specific Alaska volume. The sources cited here also do not verify a binding South Korean commitment to buy LNG from Alaska, or establish a potential volume and schedule.
