Pals are Palworld’s capturable creatures: you can take them on your team, use them in combat and exploration, and assign suitable ones to help run your base. Their work suitability shows which jobs they can perform and at what level; breeding gives you a way to pursue a particular species and useful inherited traits. Pocketpair describes the game as having “200+ distinct Pals,” each with different skills.
What are Pals in Palworld?
Pals are creatures you can weaken and capture with Pal Spheres, then use as companions. Pocketpair’s official Palworld overview describes them as part of the game’s combat, survival, and base-building systems. Depending on their abilities and how you deploy them, Pals can fight alongside you, help gather resources, tend crops, provide power, or automate production.
They are not interchangeable workers: each Pal has its own capabilities, and not every Pal can do every job. Keeping them fed and rested also matters to efficient base operation.
What do work skills and work suitability mean?
Work suitability is the in-game rating that indicates which base jobs a Pal can do and its level for each one. “Work skills” is a useful general term for those jobs. A Pal might be suited to one task or several, and its level in one job does not determine its ability in another.

Examples include Kindling for tasks such as cooking or smelting, Handiwork for crafting, Mining for extracting resources, Watering and Planting for farm work, and Generating Electricity for power. The job list and mechanics can change between game updates, so check the current in-game descriptions for the version you are playing. How suitability levels can improve
PalworldCenter’s version 1.0 guide describes a level-10 suitability cap, increases through the Pal Essence Condenser, and job handbooks that raise a Pal’s level in a job it already has. These are patch-sensitive mechanics, not guarantees for every future version; check the item description and current game rules before investing resources.

How to choose Pals for your base
Choose workers around the tasks your base actually needs. If one production step is slowing everything down, prioritize a suitable specialist for that job. If your base needs several kinds of work and has no single bottleneck, a Pal with a useful combination of jobs may offer more flexibility.

- Useful job combination: Consider whether its other suitable jobs help your base or distract from the role you need filled.
- Partner skill: A Pal’s partner-skill effects may change its value alongside its job rating.
- Access and upkeep: Make sure it can reach the work area and has food and rest; pathing and base setup can undermine a strong suitability rating.
- Investment and availability: Account for how difficult the Pal is to obtain and whether improving it with handbooks or the condenser is worth the resources.
There is no universally best worker independent of a base’s layout and needs. PC Gamer’s August 14, 2026 comparison illustrates the tradeoff between suitability, versatility, and availability; its picks are editorial recommendations rather than official rules.

Breeding can help you pursue a particular offspring species and traits suited to a goal, such as combat, movement, or base work. A current Palworld Companion breeding guide, updated July 17, 2026, describes using a Breeding Farm and Cake with two compatible parents of different genders.
Plan around a specific goal
- Decide which species you want and what role it should fill, such as a particular base job.
- Choose compatible parents, consulting a current breeding reference for the desired pairing rather than assuming a pairing guarantees a specific result.
- Consider inherited passive skills that support the Pal’s intended role.
- Only then weigh further optimization, including IVs, condensing, and Awakening.
Those five factors—species, IVs, passive skills, condensing, and Awakening—are late-game optimization considerations, not prerequisites for understanding breeding. Exact combinations and inheritance outcomes can be version-sensitive, so use a current reference for specific pairings.

- Match each worker to jobs shown in its work suitability rather than assigning it by species name alone.
- Use specialists to relieve bottlenecks and versatile workers where your base benefits from flexibility.
- Check partner skills as well as job levels when comparing candidates.
- Keep work areas reachable and provide food and rest so a suitable worker can operate effectively.
- Breed toward a defined species or trait goal, and verify detailed mechanics against your installed game version.
