Micro RGB TVs are LCD televisions that use tiny red, green, and blue LEDs in the backlight behind the LCD image-forming layer. They are not MicroLED TVs, whose pixels emit their own light. The technology drew attention at CES 2026 because several major brands presented RGB-backlit LCD models, though “everywhere” is headline shorthand: it does not mean every television at the show used it.
What are Micro RGB TVs?
A conventional LCD television needs a light source behind its image-forming LCD layer. Micro RGB sets use separate red, green, and blue LEDs in that backlight, with a control system adjusting the light while the LCD forms the picture. Samsung describes the LEDs in its 2026 lineup as smaller than 100 micrometers and independently emitting; LG describes precise control of RGB LED backlights.

The design aims to give the television more direct control over primary-color light, color reproduction, and dimming. Those are engineering goals, not proof by themselves that every Micro RGB model will outperform OLED or other LCD televisions. That comparison depends on the specific model and independent testing.
Is Micro RGB the same as MicroLED?
No. Despite the similar names, Micro RGB is an LCD technology with RGB LEDs behind the LCD layer. Samsung describes its RGB LEDs as a backlight, and LG identifies Micro RGB evo as an LCD television. MicroLED uses self-emissive pixels: the pixels themselves produce light rather than relying on an LCD layer and a backlight.

The terminology also varies by manufacturer. Samsung and LG use “Micro RGB,” while Hisense showed “RGB evo” and TCL showed “Mini RGB” at CES 2026. Event coverage grouped these branded products under the broader RGB-backlight or RGB Mini-LED direction; the names do not establish that all implementations are identical.
Why was Micro RGB prominent at CES 2026?
Several large television makers brought RGB-backlit LCD products or variants to the same major product-show window. Omdia described the move of Micro RGB backlighting into consumer models as a defining television-hardware development, and CES coverage identified examples from Samsung, LG, Hisense, and TCL.
That makes “everywhere” a shorthand for a visible multi-brand trend, not a measured count or market-share claim. The cited coverage does not establish how many televisions at CES used the approach or what share of all sets shown they represented.

Which Micro RGB TVs were announced?
| Manufacturer and model | What was announced | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung R95H | Samsung announced a 130-inch-class display at CES on January 8, 2026. Samsung says the model covers 100% of the BT.2020 color gamut, with VDE verification noted by the company, and lists HDR and AI features. | The 130-inch-class announcement is a showpiece, not evidence that this is a typical retail size. Attribute the gamut figure to Samsung and check the final regional model. |
| Samsung R95H and R85H | Samsung says both use the same Micro RGB backlights. It lists a more advanced processor, Glare Free technology, and Wireless One Connect Ready support for R95H. Motion Xcelerator is specified at 165Hz for R95H and 144Hz for R85H. | Features differ by model. Confirm the exact regional SKU and its inputs and gaming support before comparing or buying. |
| LG Micro RGB evo MRGB95 | LG identified 75-, 86-, and 100-inch sizes in a pre-CES announcement. It said Intertek certified 100% coverage of BT.2020, DCI-P3, and Adobe RGB; LG later identified MRGB95 as the 2026 flagship designation. | The coverage figures are LG’s reported certification results, not a complete picture-quality score. Confirm current regional configurations. |
| Hisense RGB evo and TCL Mini RGB | A CES roundup listed these among the RGB-backlit variants shown at the event. | This supports the breadth of the trend, but the roundup is not a substitute for official model specifications. |
Samsung executive Hun Lee called the 130-inch model “the peak of our picture quality innovation”; LG executive Park Hyoung-sei said Micro RGB evo reached a milestone for the category. These are company statements, not independent evaluations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does Micro RGB compare with OLED or Mini-LED?
Micro RGB remains an LCD design: its LEDs illuminate a separate LCD layer. OLED is a different display architecture, while “Mini-LED” generally describes an LCD backlight using many small LEDs. The CES coverage grouped products with different branded names under a broader RGB-backlight trend, but it does not establish that all use the same backlight design or control system.
Color-gamut claims can describe how much of a defined color space a model covers; they do not by themselves establish perceived contrast, black levels, motion handling, reflection performance, or overall picture quality. The available announcements do not provide controlled, independent head-to-head testing that establishes a universal winner over OLED or conventional Mini-LED.
Quick Recap
What should you check when comparing models?
- Size and room fit: The cited examples range from LG’s announced 75-, 86-, and 100-inch sizes to Samsung’s 130-inch-class R95H showpiece. Check which sizes are actually sold in your market and whether the screen suits your room and seating distance.
- Reflections and brightness: Samsung identifies Glare Free on R95H. Independent, model-specific testing is needed to compare reflection handling and perceived contrast in a real room.
- Gaming: Samsung specifies different Motion Xcelerator rates for R95H and R85H. Check the exact model’s HDMI inputs, variable refresh rate support, and console or PC requirements; the listed rate alone does not settle compatibility.
- HDR, sound, and software: Samsung lists HDR10+ Advanced and Dolby Atmos for its lineup; LG lists Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for its 2026 RGB evo TVs. Confirm format support, audio features, apps, and software commitments for the specific model and market.
- Price and independent reviews: The cited announcements do not establish current prices or controlled comparisons. Use current regional listings and independent model-specific testing before making a purchase decision.
