Automotive safety systems are vehicle features or equipment designed to help prevent a crash, reduce injuries when one happens, or support emergency response afterward. They include technologies that warn or assist the driver, restraints such as seat belts and airbags, and services that can notify responders after a collision.
What are automotive safety systems?
The term covers equipment with three broad purposes: crash avoidance and control, occupant protection, and post-crash response. A feature’s purpose and behavior matter more than its marketing name; manufacturers and agencies may group technologies differently.
- Avoidance and control: Help the driver maintain control or avoid a collision, through warnings or interventions such as braking or steering.
- Occupant protection: Reduce injury during a collision using restraints and related sensors.
- Post-crash response: Help summon assistance or communicate crash information after an impact.
What is the difference between active and passive safety?
Active safety traditionally means systems intended to help avoid a crash; passive safety means systems intended to reduce injuries during or after one. The distinction is useful, but it is not a complete guide to how every modern feature works. An Audi A7 training document from 2013, for example, places ABS, electronic stability control (ESC), traction control (TCS), and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) in its active-safety examples, and airbags, crash sensors, seat-belt tensioners, and force limiters in its passive-safety examples. That is an illustration of the distinction, not a list of equipment present in every vehicle.
For practical decisions, identify whether a specific system warns, brakes, steers, restrains, or requests help—and under what conditions it operates.

Which systems help prevent or manage a crash?
Braking, stability, and tire-pressure systems
Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) help manage braking. ESC helps maintain vehicle stability, while traction control helps manage wheel slip. Tire-pressure monitoring alerts the driver to pressure conditions. These features can support control, but do not eliminate the need to drive appropriately for road, weather, and vehicle conditions.
Warnings and visibility assistance
Warnings alert the driver to a potential hazard; they do not necessarily take control of the vehicle. NHTSA describes these examples:

Automatic braking and lane assistance
Some systems intervene rather than only warn. Automatic emergency braking (AEB) can apply the brakes when a forward collision is imminent. Pedestrian AEB detects a pedestrian in the vehicle’s path; rear automatic braking can brake while reversing. Lane-keeping assistance can use steering, braking, or acceleration at a wheel to correct unintended drift. Adaptive cruise control adjusts speed to maintain a set following distance.

Does lane assist drive the car?
Not by itself. “Lane assist” can describe different functions, from a warning to an intervention that briefly corrects drift. NHTSA’s automation levels help clarify the driver’s role:
- Level 0: Momentary alerts or safety interventions; the driver remains engaged.
- Level 1: Continuing assistance with steering or with acceleration and braking, but not both at once; the driver remains fully engaged.
- Level 2: Assistance with both steering and acceleration/braking; the driver must still remain fully engaged and attentive.
At Levels 0–2, the driver remains responsible for monitoring and driving. A broad marketing label does not establish that a vehicle is self-driving; understand the actual feature and its limits.

How do seat belts and airbags protect occupants?
Seat belts, pretensioners, force limiters, airbags, occupant sensors, and crash sensors are examples of occupant-protection systems. Airbags are supplemental protection designed to work best with seat belts, not a substitute for them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAirbags are not designed to deploy in every crash. NHTSA says frontal airbags are generally designed for moderate-to-severe frontal or near-frontal crashes; deployment depends on crash characteristics, system design, and sensor locations. After an airbag deploys, it cannot be reused and must be replaced by an authorized service technician.

- Tungsten double-head hammer: 1800HV hardness, 3 times stronger than common carbon steel – for instant car-door window breakage
- Sharp blade for easily cutting through a seat belt; bright-orange plastic handle provides a secure grip
- Designed to help escape from a sinking, over-turned, crashed, or burning car
- Protective bracket included for safe storage; store in center console or driver-side door pocket
Child passengers and passenger airbags
NHTSA recommends that children under 13 ride in the back seat in a restraint appropriate for their age and size. Some vehicles have occupant-sensing systems that may turn off the passenger airbag in certain circumstances. Follow both the vehicle manual and the child-restraint manual for installation and passenger-airbag instructions.
What happens after a crash?
Automatic crash notification is a post-crash response feature: it can notify emergency responders that a crash occurred and provide the vehicle’s location. It does not prevent a crash or replace calling for help when needed. Availability and operation depend on the specific vehicle and service.
What does U.S. law require, and what do safety ratings tell you?
In an April 29, 2024 announcement, NHTSA said Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 127 will require AEB, including pedestrian AEB, on passenger cars and light trucks by September 2029. The U.S. rule requires vehicles to stop and avoid contact with a vehicle ahead up to 62 mph, automatic braking when a lead-vehicle collision is imminent up to 90 mph, and automatic braking when a pedestrian is detected up to 45 mph. These are requirements for vehicles covered by the U.S. standard, not a statement that every vehicle currently has AEB or that the rule applies worldwide. NHTSA projected the standard would save at least 360 lives and prevent at least 24,000 injuries annually; these are agency projections, not measured outcomes.

A vehicle without a rating is not thereby proven unsafe: vehicles sold in the United States are manufacturer-certified as meeting applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, which address matters including braking, crashworthiness, and fuel integrity. A rating, regulatory compliance, and the presence of a particular optional feature are separate questions.
Quick Recap
How can you check which systems a vehicle has?
- Identify the exact vehicle: Confirm the make, model, model year, and trim. Features can vary within a model line and may be optional.
- Check its equipment list and owner’s manual: Look for the system’s actual name, whether it is standard or optional, and its operating conditions and limitations.
- Review official safety information: Use NHTSA ratings for crash-protection and rollover information, while remembering that a rating does not answer whether a particular feature is installed.
- Compare function, not labels: For each feature, note its purpose, whether it warns or intervenes, its operating limits, and what the driver must do.
