Investors comparing China Construction Bank (CCB) with other listed Chinese banks can start with Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), Bank of China (BOC), and China Merchants Bank (CMB). They are comparison candidates—not interchangeable securities or recommendations. To compare them fairly, check current issuer reports and identify the exact share class and market you can access.
Which bank stocks are reasonable alternatives to compare?
These banks offer different ways to examine exposure to China’s banking sector. A large state-owned bank and a national joint-stock bank may have different business mixes and risk exposures, so a peer list alone does not establish that one is safer, cheaper, or a closer match for CCB.
| Bank | Why include it in a comparison | What the available sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) | A large listed-bank peer to investigate. | EY’s review of listed mainland banks includes ICBC. The available material does not establish a current valuation, yield, or performance ranking. EY, Listed banks in China 2024: Review and outlook |
| Agricultural Bank of China (ABC) | Another listed-bank candidate for a peer comparison. | The available source material does not provide a dated, comparable set of ABC metrics. Check its latest issuer reports before drawing conclusions. |
| Bank of China (BOC) | A listed-bank candidate with investor reporting available by share class. | BOC’s financial reports page lists 2026 interim and 2025 annual reports, with separate A-share and H-share materials. Bank of China financial reports |
| China Merchants Bank (CMB) | A national joint-stock bank to compare with the large state-owned banks. | EY’s review of listed mainland banks includes CMB. Its inclusion does not establish a current ranking against CCB or other peers. EY, Listed banks in China 2024: Review and outlook |
EY says its 2024 review examines performance, operating models, and regulation among listed mainland banks, and that bank annual reports are generally its data source. Use the review as sector context, then verify current figures in each bank’s own filings.

What CCB security are you comparing against?
CCB has Hong Kong H-shares under code 00939 and Shanghai A-shares under code 601939, as shown on its investor relations page. A-share and H-share securities are distinct instruments, not just two labels for one trade. When comparing exposure, record the market and share class as well as the bank name; currency, trading venue, and access arrangements can differ. Whether a particular security is available to you depends on your jurisdiction and brokerage.

How to compare the banks without relying on headline yields
Use reports covering the same period and apply the same definitions to each bank. A current comparison should examine:
- Asset quality: Review non-performing loans, loan concentrations, and provisions together; a single headline measure does not describe the whole credit picture.
- Capital, funding, and liquidity: Check the relevant ratios and disclosures in each issuer’s filings, noting reporting dates and definitions.
- Profitability and revenue mix: Compare net interest margin and earnings alongside other sources of revenue, rather than treating one metric as a complete performance measure.
- Dividends: Distinguish a declared dividend from a trailing yield. A yield depends on the share price and measurement date, and a past or declared payment does not by itself establish future income.
- Valuation: Choose a valuation measure and use prices and financial data from consistent dates. The available sources do not provide a current, like-for-like valuation ranking.
- Share class and market: Confirm whether the instrument is an A-share or H-share and account for its currency, market, and the access available through your broker.
CCB’s investor page lists its 2026 half-year report dated 28 August 2026 and an H-share version dated 28 September 2026. For BOC, the investor reports page lists 2026 interim and 2025 annual materials with separate A-share and H-share versions. Match the reporting period and security class when building a comparison; do not combine mismatched periods or assume that a report date is a share-price date.

Could a fund provide broader China banking exposure?
A pooled fund could be an alternative to selecting individual bank shares, but no specific China banking ETF is established here as a verified option. Before considering a fund, confirm its current holdings, fees, domicile, share class, and availability in your jurisdiction using the issuer’s official factsheet. Without those details, it is not possible to say that a particular fund provides the exposure you want.

ICBC, ABC, BOC, and CMB are sensible names to investigate alongside CCB, but the available information does not show which has the best current valuation, lowest risk, strongest performance, highest dividend yield, or easiest access for a particular investor. Those conclusions require dated, comparable issuer data and depend on the exact security and investor circumstances. This is general information, not personalized financial advice.
