AI toys for kids are physical toys that use artificial intelligence or chatbot technology to interact with a child. Depending on the product, they may listen and respond to speech, recognize images, or move in response to a child. Smart dolls, interactive robots, AI plush toys, and learning companions are common examples—but no single feature applies to every toy.
What makes a toy an AI toy?
The key distinction is how the toy interacts, not whether it looks like a robot or has a screen. UNICEF describes AI techniques such as natural-language processing, which can let a toy listen and respond; computer vision, which can let it interpret images; and robotics, which can enable movement. The NSW Government also uses a practical definition that includes toys using AI or chatbot technology to interact with children. UNICEF’s Policy Guidance on AI for Children 2.0 and the NSW Government’s AI toy guidance describe the category from these different angles.
A toy does not need a humanoid body, moving parts, or a display to use AI. On the other hand, a product being marketed as “smart” or “interactive” does not by itself prove that it uses AI. Check what it actually does and how it responds. A connected toy may use the internet or an app without necessarily using AI; connectivity and AI are separate questions.
Examples and features vary by product
AI toys can take forms such as dolls, robots, plush toys, or learning companions. A particular AI robot toy for kids, for example, might respond to spoken prompts, while another toy may use a different kind of interaction. Product descriptions should explain the actual features rather than relying on a broad category label.
#1 Best Overall

- Singing, Dancing & Educational Companion: This robot toy combines built-in songs, dance moves, auto demo, science knowledge, and interactive play in one entertaining design. A birthday, holiday, or Christmas gift for boys and girls who love robots, technology, and smart toys
Depending on the toy, features may include:
- Conversational responses or interactive storytelling.
- Memory of earlier interactions.
- Human-like or emotionally styled responses.
- Voice or image recording.
- An app or internet connection.
These are possibilities, not requirements. Do not assume a toy records or uploads conversations, remembers a child, or connects to the internet without checking that product’s documentation.
Does an AI toy think or feel?
No human-like appearance or conversational style should be taken as evidence that a toy has human thoughts or feelings. Ying Xu, an AI and education researcher interviewed by UNICEF USA, offers a child-friendly explanation: “You might explain that these tools follow instructions, recognize patterns, or respond to our voices, but they do not ‘think’ or ‘feel’ the way people do.” See the UNICEF USA interview with Ying Xu.

- 📱【 Powerful Android System with Endless Apps】Built-in Google Play Store lets you download your favorite educational apps, learning software, streaming services, and games. Equipped with 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, expandable TF card support, Wi-Fi (2.4GHz), Bluetooth connectivity, and OTA online updates to keep your robot up to date.
- 💬【Smart AI Conversations & Fun Moving Companion】More than just a learning device, Voltix features intelligent AI voice interaction that can answer questions, chat with kids, tell stories, and sing songs. Smooth wheels allow the robot to move around, dance, and interact naturally, creating a more engaging companion experience.
- 🔋【Long Battery Life & Family-Friendly Design】Powered by a built-in 4000mAh rechargeable battery, the robot provides approximately 4–6 hours of continuous use on a single charge. The bright 7-inch HD display (1024 × 600 resolution) delivers vivid visuals while the compact design makes it perfect for bedrooms, playrooms, travel, and family activities.
That distinction matters because a responsive toy can sound personal even when it is operating as a designed system. Explain to children that the toy is technology, not a person or a substitute for relationships with family and friends.

Start with the toy’s product information and privacy documentation. The NSW Government advises families to consider data collection, connectivity, safety, and the role of the toy in a child’s play. UNICEF’s child-centred principles add questions about age suitability, transparency, privacy, and children’s agency. These questions are a way to evaluate a product, not a certification that any named toy has passed a safety standard.

- Recording and personal data: Does the toy record conversations, collect other personal information, or capture images? What data does it gather?
- Connection: Does it work offline, or does it require an app or internet connection? What functions depend on being online?
- Storage and sharing: Where is information stored, how long is it kept, and may the company share or sell it?
- Controls and clarity: Can caregivers understand and control the system? Is it clear to the child when they are interacting with AI?
- Age suitability and safety: Is the interaction appropriate for the child’s developmental stage? Is independent child-safety testing described?
- Quality of play: Does the toy encourage creativity, open-ended play, and interaction with other people, or could it crowd out family time, friendships, or independent imaginative play?
If the manufacturer does not clearly answer important questions about data, storage, sharing, or safety, the NSW Government guidance says it may be safer to avoid the product.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can AI toys help children learn?
AI can be used for activities such as interactive stories, vocabulary practice, creative tools, and personalized learning. Those are possible uses of AI, not proof that a particular toy improves a child’s development. UNICEF’s guidance says claims that toys improve literacy, language development, or social skills need further comparative study. UNICEF also notes that evidence about AI’s effects on young children is limited. See UNICEF’s discussion of early childhood development and AI and its guidance on AI for children.

When evaluating a learning claim, look for evidence about the specific product and outcome rather than assuming that personalization or conversation automatically produces a developmental benefit. Keep the toy’s role in balance with play and learning involving people.

Why privacy and child-centred design matter
Some AI toys may handle sensitive information, produce age-inappropriate responses, or encourage a child to treat a commercial system as a personal relationship. These are potential concerns, not guaranteed outcomes for every product. UNICEF’s child-centred guidance emphasizes developmentally appropriate design, transparency, limited data collection, inclusion, and children’s agency. It states: “Children’s data must never be used to optimise engagement at the expense of wellbeing.” See UNICEF’s Child Centric AI principles and its Guidance on AI and children, version 3.0.
Those principles point to a practical standard for families: a toy should be understandable to both child and caregiver, collect only what it needs, and support creativity rather than dependence on constant interaction.
