Cellular generations are broad stages in the evolution of mobile-network standards and capabilities. In simple terms, 1G was analogue, 2G introduced digital cellular service, and 3G through 5G are associated with the ITU’s IMT-2000, IMT-Advanced and IMT-2020 frameworks. 6G is being developed under the IMT-2030 framework, but its final technology standards are not yet complete.

The number does not guarantee a particular speed or experience. Generations and technologies can coexist, and real-world service depends on the network deployment and local conditions.

What does “G” mean in a cellular network?

The “G” stands for generation. It is a shorthand for a broad stage in the development of cellular systems—not a single technology that every country switched to at the same time. Networks using different generations can operate alongside one another, and operators have adopted standards on different schedules.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) provides internationally recognized reference frameworks for the later generations: IMT-2000 for 3G, IMT-Advanced for 4G, IMT-2020 for 5G and IMT-2030 for the emerging 6G framework. The early distinction is simpler: 1G was analogue cellular, while 2G was digital cellular. ITU’s overview of mobile generations describes that progression.

How do the cellular generations differ?

Generation ITU reference Plain-language meaning Important qualification
1G Analogue cellular Early cellular systems carried mobile voice over analogue radio. Early systems varied by market; there was no single worldwide launch technology.
2G Digital cellular Cellular service moved to digital radio technologies. 2G covered multiple standards rather than one global air interface.
3G IMT-2000 Mobile systems expanded data capabilities and brought mobile broadband. IMT-2000 is a family and framework, not one branded technology.
4G IMT-Advanced A mobile-broadband generation associated with the IMT-Advanced framework. “4G” is also used more loosely in consumer and industry usage; not every service marketed that way has the same formal status.
5G IMT-2020 A generation supporting a wider set of mobile-broadband and connectivity capabilities. Standards capabilities and targets are not guarantees of the speed or latency an individual user will receive.
6G IMT-2030 framework The emerging framework for the next generation of mobile systems. The framework exists, but detailed technology choices and final standards remain future work.

Is LTE the same as 4G?

In everyday consumer terminology, LTE is commonly marketed as 4G. In the ITU’s formal designation history, however, the 4G framework is IMT-Advanced, and LTE-Advanced—not every LTE release or deployment—was accorded that designation. WirelessMAN-Advanced also received the official IMT-Advanced designation. The ITU notes that “4G” has been used more broadly for LTE, HSPA+, WiMAX and evolved 3G technologies that did not meet the full IMT-Advanced requirements. The ITU-D overview of IMT explains the formal designation.

So the practical answer is yes: LTE is often called 4G. The standards answer is narrower: LTE-Advanced is the named LTE technology associated with the formal IMT-Advanced designation. Neither label by itself establishes that two LTE services deliver the same performance.

Does 5G guarantee a certain speed?

No. IMT-2020 defines capabilities and requirements for the generation, not a promise that every phone will reach a particular speed or latency. The ITU’s 2022 mobile-broadband overview gives 100 Mbit/s user data rate and a connection density of at least 1,000,000 devices per square kilometre as examples of IMT-2020 requirements. These are framework-level figures, not ordinary-user guarantees. ITU’s mobile-broadband trends overview provides those examples.

5G also has different deployment architectures. In a standalone deployment, the network uses a new 5G radio access network and core without requiring an underlying 4G network. In a non-standalone deployment, 5G uses an existing 4G network as an anchor. This describes network architecture; it is not a direct measure of signal quality or the speed a user will see. The ITU’s 5G backgrounder describes these deployment models.

Is 6G available yet?

The ITU established the IMT-2030 framework in 2023, giving future mobile systems a direction for development. That does not mean final 6G radio technologies or a complete commercial standard are already in place. The ITU describes technology approval as a later step, with final standards expected by 2030. Treat claims about 6G as descriptions of future development unless they clearly identify an established standard and deployed service.

The framework identifies 15 capabilities, according to the ITU’s 2023 announcement. This is a count of framework capabilities, not a list of finalized product features guaranteed to appear in every future 6G network. See the ITU announcement on the IMT-2030 framework and the ITU-R IMT-2030 framework recommendation.

How to interpret a generation label

Use the label as a broad clue about the network’s standards family and intended capabilities, not as a standalone performance rating. For a particular connection, the generation name alone does not tell you the technology release, deployment architecture or conditions affecting service. The distinction matters most for 4G, where formal standards language and common marketing use do not always match, and for 6G, where a framework is not the same as finalized specifications or a deployed network.
