An appliance warranty covers only the parts, failures, repairs and time period specified in the written terms for that model. An extended warranty sold separately is usually a paid service contract with its own exclusions, fees and claims process—not automatically an extension of the manufacturer’s promise. Before buying one, compare what it adds, what it costs and how difficult it may be to use.
What does an appliance warranty cover?
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes a written warranty as “a promise from a manufacturer or seller to stand behind a product.” For a household appliance, the written terms spell out the company’s promise; coverage varies by product and model. Check the appliance’s actual warranty rather than relying on a retailer’s general description. The FTC says warranty details should be available to read before purchase.
Look for the covered components and repairs, the problems or failures included, the remedy offered, and the warranty term. A remedy may be repair, replacement or a refund, as specified in the document. Also check any conditions involving use, maintenance, registration, labor or shipping. If a repair or part is not listed as covered, FTC guidance advises assuming it is not covered.

What does an appliance warranty not cover?
There is no single list of exclusions that applies to every appliance. The model’s written terms determine what the warranty leaves out as well as what it covers. Do not treat a manufacturer warranty as all-purpose insurance: an issue, part or repair that the terms do not include is not promised coverage.
Read any conditions alongside the exclusions. For example, maintenance or use requirements may affect whether a claim qualifies. If you are unsure how a clause applies to your appliance or a particular failure, ask the company responsible for the warranty to explain it in writing.

What does an extended warranty cover?
A separately sold “extended warranty” is generally a paid service contract. It may cover different problems from the included warranty, cover only specified components or repairs, or duplicate protection you already have. The plan’s own contract—not its marketing name—sets out the coverage, term, fees and claims process. The plan provider may not be the appliance manufacturer, so identify the company responsible for the contract.
The FTC’s guidance on extended warranties and service contracts recommends checking whether a plan adds useful coverage and whether its cost and terms make sense. A plan can have limited practical value if it duplicates existing protection, excludes the problem you care about, or is difficult to claim against.

How to compare an appliance service contract
Compare the contract with the appliance’s included warranty, and with the alternative of setting the same money aside for repairs. Check these details before paying:
- Added coverage: Which parts, failures and repairs does the plan cover beyond the included warranty? Is accidental damage included, if that matters to you?
- Term and start date: How long does coverage last, and when does the plan begin? Note any overlap with the manufacturer’s warranty.
- Total cost and fees: Add the plan price and any deductible, service-call fee, shipping charge or transfer fee. Check whether the contract limits reimbursement or total payouts.
- Conditions and exclusions: Look for required maintenance, use restrictions and other conditions that could affect a claim. Do not assume an unlisted problem is covered.
- Claims and repair route: Find out who receives and handles claims, who performs repairs, and whether you must return the appliance to a particular seller or repair center. Consider the time and effort involved.
- Provider: Identify the company obligated to provide service. Check its track record, reviews and complaints to your state consumer protection office.
To make the price easier to assess, calculate the total cost per month or year of coverage. Then compare the actual added protection and claim terms—not just the duration—with the cost of keeping that money available for repairs. The FTC identifies saving for repair costs as an alternative to buying a contract; it is an option, not a guaranteed cheaper choice for every household.

Is an extended warranty worth it?
There is no universal break-even price or yes-or-no answer. Consider a plan only if it fills a meaningful gap beyond the included warranty, covers failures you are concerned about, and has acceptable costs and claims terms for your repair budget and tolerance for risk. The available FTC guidance does not establish how likely a particular appliance is to need repairs, so it cannot predict whether a specific plan will pay off.
Service experience is another consideration, but historical survey results are not a forecast for a current plan. Consumer Reports’ Best Extended Warranty Buying Guide reports that, in its 2015 Repair and Replace Appliance Survey, 23% of respondents whose appliances were repaired under an extended warranty said it took more than one try to get the repair right, compared with 15% of respondents who paid for a repair themselves. Those figures describe that survey’s respondents and year; they do not establish current performance for every provider or appliance, or a universal cost comparison.

Can using an independent repairer void an appliance warranty?
FTC consumer guidance says federal law generally prevents a manufacturer from requiring you to use specifically branded parts or services to keep warranty coverage, unless the parts or services are provided for free or the FTC has granted a waiver. That does not mean every repair-related claim must be covered. A company may distinguish a denial based solely on using an independent repairer from a claim that the repair caused the particular damage. Check the written terms and the facts of the repair. State law can affect implied warranties, and the federal guidance does not settle state-specific rights.
