Apple TV 4K uses its built-in storage primarily for locally installed apps. Apple describes the device as streaming video and music while storing apps locally; Photos content is accessed through iCloud Photos or Shared Photo Library rather than documented as a full-resolution library kept on the television. If space is running low, you can inspect each app’s usage, offload an app while retaining its data, or delete the app and its data.
Apple TV storage at a glance
The clearest description comes from Apple’s Free up storage on Apple TV 4K guide: “Your Apple TV 4K streams video and music, but it stores apps locally.” That sentence explains the practical difference between using Apple TV and using it as a general-purpose storage device.

What Apple TV stores locally
Apps are the documented local storage use
Apple’s storage guidance focuses on installed apps. Each app occupies space on the Apple TV, and Apple notes that the more apps you download, the more storage is used. This applies to streaming apps, games, utilities and other software installed from the App Store. The storage screen lets you see the amount attributed to each app rather than forcing you to guess which installation is responsible for a warning.
Apple’s published guides reviewed for this topic do not provide a single storage-capacity figure for every Apple TV model, nor do they establish a universal amount of free space available after tvOS is installed. Capacity therefore has to be treated as model-specific information, not as one number that applies to every Apple TV 4K.

App data remains separate from the app itself
Apple distinguishes an app from its retained data. That distinction is important when choosing between offloading and deleting. Offloading removes the app software to reclaim space but keeps the app’s data on the Apple TV. Deleting removes both the app and its data. Apple’s installation guide explains that an offloaded app can be downloaded again if it is still available in the App Store, with its retained data restored; data removed by deleting the app may not be recoverable.
How to see which apps use space
On Apple TV 4K, Apple’s tvOS 27 storage guide gives this path:
- Open Settings.
- Choose General.
- Select Usage.
- Open Manage Storage.
The Manage Storage screen lists installed apps and how much space each uses. Start with the largest entries, then decide whether the app should be offloaded or deleted. This is more reliable than removing apps solely because they appear old or infrequently used.

Offload or delete: the two ways to free space

Apple also documents an automatic option named Offload Unused Apps under Settings > Apps. When enabled, tvOS can remove unused app software to make room while retaining the associated data. The option is different from deleting: deleting intentionally removes the data, whereas offloading is designed to keep it.

If you later select an offloaded app, Apple TV can download it again when the app remains available in the App Store. Apple says the retained data can then be used again. Availability can change if the developer removes an app or it is no longer offered for your account or region.
What happens to photos and videos in the Photos app
Apple TV is an access point for iCloud Photos
Apple’s Sync your iCloud photos on Apple TV 4K guide says Apple TV 4K can sync iCloud Photos and Shared Photo Library content. Apple describes iCloud Photos as automatically storing full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud. On Apple TV, you can browse that content in Photos, including photos, videos, Memories, shared albums and slideshows, as described in Apple’s Photos app at a glance.
Only the default profile on Apple TV 4K can sync photos and view content in Photos, according to Apple’s guide. That profile limitation matters in a household with multiple users: changing profiles does not imply that every profile has an independent, synchronized photo library on the television.

Seeing an iCloud photo on the screen does not establish that the full-resolution original has been copied into Apple TV’s local storage. Apple’s documentation identifies iCloud as the place where full-resolution photos and videos are stored, while Apple TV provides the viewing and browsing experience. The cited guides do not specify a complete local-download policy or promise that every item in an iCloud library is permanently cached on the device.

What Apple TV is not documented to store
The title “what it cannot store” needs a qualification: Apple’s cited pages explain the documented storage model, but they do not publish an exhaustive list of every file type Apple TV can never hold. The supported contrast is narrower and more useful:
- Apple documents local storage for installed apps, not a general-purpose folder system for your personal files.
- Apple describes video and music as being streamed. The storage guide does not describe Apple TV as a destination for importing and managing a personal collection of video or music files.
- Apple documents Photos access through iCloud Photos and Shared Photo Library. It does not say that the complete full-resolution iCloud library is stored locally on Apple TV.
- The cited Apple guides do not establish that an external drive can be attached to expand Apple TV storage.
These points are different from claiming that Apple TV is incapable of holding every kind of temporary data or cache. Apple’s support pages simply do not provide the detailed inventory needed for that universal statement.
Can an external drive expand Apple TV storage?
Do not buy a drive on the assumption that it will function as an Apple TV storage expansion. The Apple storage, Photos and app-installation guides cited here do not document a supported external-drive method for increasing Apple TV capacity, moving apps to a drive or creating a user-accessible file library.
That is an evidence boundary, not a claim that every accessory is physically incompatible. A specific drive, adapter or future tvOS release would require its own current Apple documentation before you could treat it as a supported capacity upgrade. For a low-space warning today, use the built-in Manage Storage and app-offloading tools instead.

What to do when Apple TV reports low storage
- Open the usage list. Go to Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage and identify the largest apps.
- Classify each app. Keep frequently used apps, mark rarely used apps as candidates for offloading, and identify apps whose data you are willing to lose before deleting them.
- Offload first when data matters. Remove the app software while retaining its data. This is the safer choice if you expect to reinstall the app.
- Delete when you want a clean removal. Deleting removes the app and its data, so use it for software you no longer need or data you deliberately want gone.
- Consider automatic offloading. Under Settings > Apps, review Offload Unused Apps if you want tvOS to reclaim app space automatically while keeping data.
- Recheck the list. Return to Manage Storage to confirm that the selected app’s space has been released before removing additional software.
If an offloaded app cannot be downloaded again, check whether it is still listed in the App Store and available for your Apple Account and region. Apple’s guidance makes availability a condition of reinstalling; an app that has been withdrawn cannot be restored through the normal download path.

“I can see my photos, so they must all be on the Apple TV.”
Not necessarily. The documented workflow connects Apple TV to iCloud Photos or Shared Photo Library, where Apple says full-resolution photos and videos are stored. Viewing and browsing are not proof that the entire library has been copied locally.
“Deleting an app is the same as offloading it.”
It is not. Offloading retains app data; deleting removes the data with the app. Choose based on whether preserving the app’s local state matters.
“A larger external drive will solve a full Apple TV.”
Apple’s cited guides do not establish external-drive expansion. The documented remedy is managing installed apps through Manage Storage and the offload controls.

“There is one published storage number for every Apple TV.”
Apple’s support pages used here do not provide a model-independent capacity figure. Storage capacity and menu availability can vary by Apple TV model and software version.
Software-version and model qualifications
The storage instructions above follow Apple’s tvOS 27 guide for Apple TV 4K. Apple notes that menu names and option availability may vary by software version, model or region. If your Apple TV does not show exactly the same path, update tvOS when appropriate and look for the equivalent Usage, Manage Storage or app-management screen documented for your model. Do not assume that an option shown for Apple TV 4K on tvOS 27 appears on every earlier Apple TV.
The practical answer
Use Apple TV’s local storage for apps, and manage that space from the Usage screen. Treat video and music as streamed in Apple’s documented model, and treat Photos as iCloud-backed content viewed through the TV rather than as a guaranteed local copy of your full-resolution library. When space is tight, offload apps whose data you want to keep; delete apps whose data you are prepared to remove. Apple’s current guides do not establish a supported external-drive expansion or a complete list of content the device can never store, so avoid relying on either assumption.
