Apple virtual reality usually means the experience delivered by Apple Vision Pro, but Apple calls the product a spatial computer and its platform spatial computing. Rather than describing it simply as a virtual-reality headset, Apple emphasizes a range of experiences that place digital apps and content in the wearer’s surroundings—from room-aware windows to fully immersive virtual environments.
What is Apple virtual reality?
In practical terms, Apple’s approach to virtual reality is spatial computing through Apple Vision Pro. The headset runs visionOS, an operating system designed to place apps and digital content in the space around the wearer. Depending on the experience, that content can sit alongside the visible room or take over more of the view.
Apple Support describes Vision Pro as “a spatial computer that blends digital content and apps into your physical space” and says people navigate using their eyes, hands, and voice. What does Apple mean by spatial computing?
Spatial computing means using digital interfaces and content in relation to the physical space around you. On Vision Pro, an app can appear as a familiar 2D window, present 3D content in a volume, or use a full space for a more immersive scene. Is Apple Vision Pro a VR headset?
In ordinary conversation, people may call Vision Pro a VR headset because it is a head-worn device that can present immersive virtual environments. The distinction is that Apple prefers to describe the product and its apps in terms of spatial computing rather than labeling the platform as VR.

Apple’s developer submission guidance specifically tells developers to call their Vision Pro software a “spatial computing app” and not to describe the app experience as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), extended reality (XR), or mixed reality (MR). Vision Pro uses a combination of eyes, hands, and voice for navigation and interaction. In Apple’s model, the person looks at content, uses hand gestures to act on it, and can use voice as another input. What features has Apple announced for visionOS 26?
In an announcement dated June 9, 2025, Apple described visionOS 26 features including spatial widgets that can remain positioned in a user’s space, spatial scenes that add depth to photos, support for 180-degree, 360-degree, and wide-field-of-view content from Insta360, GoPro, and Canon, and support for PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers.
